Written for the game "Cent", currently in development. The song serves as the game's theme for the game's main menu, delivering a high energy rock theme with a clear hook to identify the game.

This 6/8 synth-rock/fantasy blend from Roncli is intriguing, but suffers from a bit of an identity crisis and is further held back by melody issues. "Cent Main Theme" is still an enjoyable 2-and-a-half minutes, and the fact that Ron was clearly swinging for the fences here helps a lot. But it's a solid base hit, not a home run.

The song is bolstered by a strong rock-style backbeat and gets off to a rousing start with a brass and string call-and-answer fanfare, but this turns out to be the song's refrain, putting the song in the awkward position of having the emotional climax right at the beginning. The verses don't hold a candle to the brightness of the refrain, sporting a limp synth melody in the first verse and then some guitar solos that are much more promising in the later verses. But while the guitar solos are fun, they really don't help establish much of a strong melody.

A big part of the problem here is that the song really doesn't have much of an identity style-wise. The strings and brass say "Fantasy!" The drumming and guitar solos say "Rock!" And the background instrumentation says "Synth Pop!" Rock and fantasy are hard enough to blend as it is, and adding synth pop to the mix ends up muddying the waters.

This could have been a real mess, but fortunately Ron keeps it all under control with clean samples, clear mixing, and an exciting atmosphere, and the result is actually fun to hear. There's a lot to criticize, but there's also a lot to enjoy, especially if you make the effort to surround yourself in the song's atmosphere.

That's part of the problem too, though... if you have to make an effort to enjoy a song, that means the song has some problems. And that's the position I'm in. This is a clearly a good song; it's just not a great one.

This song has some cool rock-epic melodies layered over a driving 6/8 rock beat. The melodies are indeed the strong point of this song - very effective and original and the song does succeed in establishing a musical motif as the composer intended. The combination of obviously synthetic brass and strings used to play these main parts is also very appropriate. One other distinctive feature of the song that I didn't find as pleasant was the mix, which is rather weird sounding and treble-heavy. This is especially evident in the rhythm parts, with the bass and bass drum being *very* low in the mix and the snare drum sounding like a burst of white noise. I assume that this is a result of designing the sound of the song for a specific gaming playform (handheld maybe?) but in the MP3 it makes for an unusual sound with a certain power noticeably lacking. Overall a "good" tune. :)

I'm not sure why the combo of the snare and the open hi hat makes such a weird sound. slammy noticed this too back when he previewed the song, and I've never been able to really "fix" it... this is the only time I've ever had a problem with the snare blending in with the hi hat.

However, I do not feel it is a major point of contention. The purpose of the particular percussion is to accent every 4th beat to give that 6/8 feeling. It accomplishes that. :)
