Well...I've been sitting on this track for quite some time thinking I was going to rework the arrangment a bit. However, I realized that I like it the way it is. So..anyway, I decided to release it (obviously). :-P

This is another genreless sonus-concoction ... little bit of rock, breakbeat, and triphop ...

Also, there is a remix in the works that'll feature Henriette's vocals. :-)

Sonus's "The Fly Queen" is an off-kilter piano-laced breakbeat composition that gets by on raw attitude. The whole song exudes a sense of barely-restrained aggression, underscored by the interplay between the airy single-note piano runs and the scratchy background synths. There's not much of a melody here, and the song has a repetitive quality that holds it back. But the attitude of the song is the main appeal here, and Sonus brings it in spades.

I'm very much reminded of pretty much the entire "Bourne" series of movies as I play this song. This song very easily puts me in the mind of someone who is capable of shocking displays of violence and aggression and manages -- barely -- to keep it under control and harnessed, just another tool in the arsenal. But that fury is always there, just under the surface.

The rhythms here are good... very, very good. Sonus makes full use of the potential of breakbeats, punching out snare hits at all the right times to drive the emotional feel of the song, riding the emotional dynamics up and down with an expert touch.

And what can I say about the piano? It fills out the high end of the spectrum nicely, but it does so much more. Sonus could've very easily used this as filler and nothing more, especially since it's all single notes with no chords. But the piano runs end up creating a nice counter-rhythm and also help with the flow of the song. So much has been wrung from so little.

Alas, there's no melody to speak of, and the song has a very similar sound all the way through that comes off as a bit repetitive. The only changes come in the form of the emotional dynamics, and it's fortunate indeed that Sonus works those dynamics so well, or else this song would be in trouble.

Attitude. That's the point of this song, and Sonus brings such an enjoyable swagger to "The Fly Queen" that you simply have to give it a try.

:) Now this is what I call a classic - effortless bigbeat action fused with trippy vibes and a touch of groovyness. This one's been on my mp3 player for a long time... now, down to the nitty gritty.

This track centers around the beats and general groove - and it's a very nice groove indeed. The beat progresses nicely in the introduction of the piece (shakers and the weird little metal isshy perc thingee) but once the main body of the song hits, it doesn't do anything interesting until the 3:00 mark where the artist launches into an excellent drum solo. In the meantime, the interest is kept by adding a cute little piano line and some nice demostyleish synth action.

The bass is deep and underscores the rockin' beats. Not much in way of variation here, but it adds mood at all the right times. Mix is excellent - everything is nice and clean, not very muddy, and all the instruments have their own space. General atmosphere/mood of the track is very nice and stands apart from all the other breakbeat songs out there, both materially and stylistically.

The method of this piece is a little different than most - it almost sounds like the artist made a bunch of loops (using his own material) and then loaded them up into another project and worked out a song using just those loops. The attitude of the song is very loopish, but it maintains creativity through nearly the very end of the piece (I say nearly the very end because the highpass effect struck me as a bit cheap, particularly after putting it on loop for three or four times).

Scoring - 8,0, ehhh and an extra 0,5 'cause I liked it so much :D

Cheers :martini:

Good song you've got here Sonus! I'm just come halfway through and the groove is very good right now. The sounds work well together with a good flow. There were some kind of break between this section and the intro section that felt very nice. You add a slightly more electronic feel to the track, starting out from a more bluesy perspective. I'm still to hear the "angry" ending you mentioned. :)

Good use of drums and the bass sits well in the mix, flooding wide.

Considering the drums and the toughness of the beat, it's a contrast to the softer rhodes part and the piano melody that is introduced after a while. I like the song as a whole, however, those parts might need some adjustments to make them mold into the song more. The rhodes kind of halt the beat with that slightly off beat note slip, you know?

Try play around with some delay and reverb on the drums to add some depth. Why not try out two different reverbs panned left vs. right?

Thus the rating :)

Take care,
1up

Depends, I don't mind the loopishness of the track. It makes it convenient to use as one of the tracks I use as background music at events I'm mixing at.

Thanks a lot for the review Provos. I am well aware of the "loopishness" that you describe in this track. I'm glad you mention it because, quite frankly, that aspect of my music pisses me off. Thanks for the kick in the ass.

Excellent stuff, great bigbeat, and the piano bits are brilliant in their simplicity and utter effortless appeareance. Certainly worth a bit more than a 7.5.

Aww, kinda disappointed here as I was hoping for the version with Henriette's vocals.. I've been listening to that version for quite some time now (as I live with her, heh) and really really love that version! The instrumental IS good, don't get me wrong, but the vocal version is just that much better IMHO..
