Mr. Sonus,
I've discovered here your newest of constructive grooves, and I must say in short: Smooth. Nice. Ahhh. So relaxing.
I really like what you've done along the drum layout. It maintains a subtle outline, yet those emphasis rolls make the track undulate down the path to smooth gravy grooves.
This would be a song I would prescribe to anyone who needs to take a look at life, and stop...take a breath...and just let go.
Life comes at you fast, it's how well you ride the surface ripples that leads you to survival.
Excellent works my friend, very nice constructive quality!

[.general] A wonderfully vinyltastic triphop journey
[.melody] The first thing we get a whiff of is a nicely distorted rhodes line... this continues throughout of the first portion of the song before disappearing for one and a half minutes or so. I should point out that despite what you might think, this is not the weakest element in the song - sure, there's only two chords, but it provides the backdrop for most of the entire song, only disappearing in the middle breakdown.
Two, no, three other instruments have a role here. I'm trying to decide which is the "lead" and I think I'm leaning towards the piano here... I might be a little biased, being a piano player of some thirteen years myself, but you've programmed a nice little melody to counterbalance the bass and guitar. This one is pretty good, of course there's always room for improvement, but it works with the song feeling wonderfully. One thing I've noticed about your tracks (this one and "the fly queen") is that your piano bits are always monophonic... try some jazzy 7th chords next time
There's a sort of lead guitar sample being used here; I say sample with some hesisation because I know you like programming your own loops, and sometimes it's hard to tell whether you ripped it or programmed it yourself, which speaks loads about your talent I suppose Anyhow, it's looped over a couple portions of the song with some filter action providing movement. Any other song, and I'd accuse the artist of being lazy, but here it works wonderfully with the mood. Reminds me of the old soul records bboys break to...
The hammond organ at 3:20 or so wasn't totally unexpected, but it was a nice touch. Hard to fault that classic sound
[.bass] Again, I can't tell if you sampled it or programmed it... it's very warm and vinyltastic. The only complaint I have here is that there's no variations, but again, that works into the atmosphere of the song...
[.percussion] Extremely nice! All the little touches you've made here really shine, from that bit of reverb on the snare to that excellent tom roll leading into the main body of the song, it's all great. Everything is clean and punchy, and I can't help but admire the way you've kept the grungy feeling from interfering with the sound quality.. top marks here!
[.feeling] Like I said before, if it were any other song, I'd accuse the artist of being lazy, but here it works wonderfully with the trippy atmosphere. Reminds me of the old soul records bboys break to... everything fits.
[.teh score] 9,0. Others might rate it differently, but this is a real gem. You oughta start sending this stuff off to labels, my man
Cheers!
p.s. apologies if my grammar seems a little funky, I just got up a few minutes ago. I assure you, I'm 100% pure blooded american (although I do prefer british conventions, like "colour" or writing "8,5") and I'm usually quite coherent once I've had some coffee... |

Hihat is a bit annoying... I guess because it is too loud and too bright. I'd lay off in some parts and add volume variations to it.
But I love this song!!! Great drums! |

Provos: Thanks for the great and indepth review!
Nekativ: Thanks for checking the track out ... To answer your question, the mix is deliberately "warm" and not really heavy on the bright end. I'll look into the level of the bass though! Thanks again!
Xerxes: You're very welcome. :-D |

I came here from Renoise song forum
I don't listen much Trip-Hop stuff, although I like thingies from it.
Heh and this was a good listen.. I'm inspired by some of the elements
Really cool track
Hmm, but here I go again about the thing I'm all about trying to learn myself too :
Do you think it would hurt the feel, if the clean piano and the organ(?) thingy later on and even the beat slightly get a little more higher frequencies to play in? I think that would sound better... But I'm listening way to much boosted shiny stuff myself, so it may not be the way to go with the genre
I also think the bass exceeds it's limits quite much. This is comparing to dub stuff I work with lately (loud basses too), but this is just crazy ... Again, could all be the genre and I should just shut up and get myself another beer and enjoy..
