Well, here is a remix of the old tune for the Ur Quan composed by an unknown artist for the game called "Star Control II".
I made a previous version which was rejected by a gaming remix website and here is a list of the improvements since the last version I submitted...
-Panning. Previous tune was like a mono tune, all instruments in the dead center.
-Volume variation for all notes
-Extra melody using counterpoint and extra precussion to add some interest and reduce boredom present in my last UrQuan remix.
-Electric guitar and low frequency notes removed from the middle of the tune to clean it up a bit.
-Reverb effects removed.
Finally I think I am learning to track and arrange.
Next step I just need to learn about how to compose...
The original tune can be downlooaded from

It is a 62Kb file, very quick for download. |

A pop/orchestral hybrid that struggles to find an appropriate balance between the two. The song starts out with a neo-orchestral soundtrack feel, with foreboding cellos and strings in 3/4 time backed up by a subdued electronic bass rhythm. The song slowly builds in intensity for the first 1:45, then abruptly crosses over into full-on pop mode with the introduction of a rock-style drum set that sounds out of place at first, due to the lack of a suitable transition. The samples used here could've been better but are adequate. At times some of the note-endings are too sharp, so better use of New Note Actions could smooth that out and give the song a more natural feel, which is important when using such life-like samples. The song lacks any real melodic punch, and everything here has a background-filler sound to it, as if it's waiting for a real melody to show up. But since this is a cover of someone else's song, that's not really AR81's fault. What he does have more control over is the atmospherics of the song, and AR81 does a good job of cultivating that atmosphere. This song as it is leaves me hungry for a melody, but AR81 has shown enough skill here with someone else's melody to leave me intrigued about what he could do with a melody of his own. |
