Artist Comment:
This Jazz/Blues tune was written at a time when I was letting too many things weigh me down. There were some depressing things happening, so I wrote this tune. I decided to finish it and enter it into the Spectrum Music Compo, where it placed second in it's category.

Spiritus sancti!
I really enjoyed listening to your "shades of futility".
It reminds me of the famous pink panther drum-motif, indeed!
Although somebody could also say, that the intro is similar to Dave Brubeck'S "Take Five", even if his one has 5/4 bpm
Anyway, you do have an own style of putting melodies together, and the arrangement fits well...
It is an groovy jazz, like it makes me snapping fingers, y'know?
Dadum da dum chac, dadum chac, ...
Maybe you could add some females' vocals and a background singing crew, then it could become part of an Edgar Wallace film

I think, you should increase the sax's volume.
The spinet's(?) solo beginning in min. 2:24 firstly appears medieval to me, until the blue notes recall the bluesy way of the song.
Very nice, indeed!

I do have a similar one, but doesn't reach your level in any aspect.

Let´s see what we´ve got here?
The first beats remind me of the pink panther :D . I love it. The melody you play with that "toy piano" and the bass line is great.
I love that quick change at 0:40 min. and then back to normal. It´s really interesting and very changing. I llove this kind of jazzy stuff.
Then the introduction of a "sax" in 1:20 min. is very accurate after that little break in which the bass plays. The only flaw is that I don´t like the sound of the sax.
I like the idea (2:16 - 2:21) but I think you should try it with brass (for example the one in "Reason" is really good). Try to improve it.
THe piano solo is absolutely gorgeous. Very relaxing, just like the whole piece.
I would variate the drums a little bit and make them play with the snare sometimes.
Then throughout the end you come up with almost all the instruments and sounds you had before. It´s like as if they´d unite in the end...love the idea. I´d also make breaks in which the "doublebass" plays doubletime, quicker and plays a catchy solo (since I play doublebass I´d love it ;) ).
Creativity: 9/10
Feeling: 10/10
Recording: 9/10
Let me know when you´ve got something new mate, your stuff is incredible.

 Hey why don't I write a review?

Really powerful melancholic feel (whatdaheck it's blues for cryin out loud) no doubt something depressive happened. Who'd ya think you are? Miles Davis?

Okay back to the review...

This song really is melancholic and somewhat moody. The intro is more of jazz than blues if ya ask me. To be honest I can't help compare this song to another from "The Incredible Machine 3"... Is that song an inspiration? Jazzy feel a bit weak. Need to improve drum beat by improvising and introducing drum fills when everybody expects least that's what jazz does. :cd: . And when you finished vibe and piano and sax solos, I don't think It's a good idea to combine them (did that in "Drunken Monkey".

Good to have Christofori here. Some marvellous, imaginative and well written stuff always to be expected from this guy.

What "Shades of Futility" have to offer is calm, evening mood, quite a few solos on several instruments and some electronic addition (I mean the effect sound). Typical jazzy acoustic bass and open hat. One who appreciates complex, improvised solos (okay, I don't know if these here are really improvised, but they sound like ones) must enjoy this track, it's all so nicely put together to work like a clock, but with incomparably more fantasy than a clock. :)

It a pity that with all the skill and care the artist put to this mod, the drums sound rather mechanical. All the fantasy was poured to the leads and bass, but the drummer seems to lack ideas for fills, doesn't take an active part in controlling the mood. I think even for the price of a greater size of the mod, or even the need to encode it to mp3, there might be a wider array of hats, cymbals, toms etc.

No tracking mistakes, no typical tracked sound sneaked into this tune. It is a huge advantage, showing the experience and ability to handle tracks and samples as should. Nothing disturbs me while listening. Well balanced, well executed. Highly recommended.

This is nice. Tracked blues is allways nice. I don't know how you guys can do this stuff. I should try myself, but I think it wouldn't work any.
Samples are allway good. Piano is realistic and horn sounds really good and has fitting reverb. Some soundeffects somehow remind me of Worms 3D. Only thing about samples that I do not like is Ride which sounds bad. Tracking rocks and production is all good.
