Artist Comment:
This is the piece taken to Siggraph 2003 in San Diego. It's for a CG Cinematic trailer, but the video was not entirely done, and only used for the "making of" video at the trade show. My sister was on the lead soprano, and I did the male gregorian chants. The Latin lyrics were also translated by myself. Not to mention, there is also a full orchestral score written for live performance if possible. In the end, this piece will be redone and mastered even further than posted. This has obviously been inspired by Hans Zimmer most bombastic work. All in all, sound quality is very good, the arrangement is good (especially the percussions) and the piece is definetely suitable for a trailer and therefore achieves its purpose.

Musically, though, it's not a great piece. Two minutes and a half is not enough time for musical development. Therefore, a piece that is so short needs to rely on other aspects different from structure to attract the listener. In general, attractive melodies or themes are needed and, obviously, a great arrangement. This piece doesn't have any memorable themes and although the arrangement is quite good, it's not that attractive. It's a typical Hans Zimmer-like arrangement, which, by the way, is not used by him in every single movie. The arrangement depends on the mood one wants to achieve, and sincerely, when I hear those modern drums and Hans Zimmer like orchestra it reminds me more of a nuclear submarine than a of a Headhunter. Using voices like the ones in the beginning is one of the most widely abused clichés of film music (just to mention two recent movies: "The Day After Tomorrow" and "Troy" started with voices, although I must admit that they were not as complex as this one). I'm not criticizing the lack of originality here. I just wonder it this arrangement is adequate for the theme. I wonder if the artist has considered more classical arrangements, or if he just jumped to the Media Ventures think right from the beginning.

Musically, though, it doesn't matter whether the arrangement is original or not. What is important, is whether it's good or not. And it's good, although I think it's better when the musician takes advantage of all orchestral instruments and not only on brass, strings and percussion. Woodwinds are difficult to handle, but they are great for introducing timbre variations. Woodwinds add colour. And they are the ones that get neglected the most by many artists of CTG that make this kind of music.

On a side note, the gregorian chant didn't sound too convincing. The timbre of the voices weren't too the ones we hear in gregorian chant. Maybe because there was a little number of voices. That's not important, though, but I think it's worth mentioning.

All that said, I think this is really good, but far from being a masterpiece of anything similar. Jared definetely knows what he's doing, but there's more to music than loud horns and lush percussion.

Alright, another good classical composer on ctg, let's see.

[Introduction]
I don't like the Gregorian chants, its not necessary to put lyrics I guess, because most people don't understand it, but that's your provocative. You can just use Voices of Apocolypse of this one, with the syllable utility on Gigastudio. Your sister's voice is fantastic, really nicely done..

1:03 Tempo Increase
Very interesting tempo increase, and very nice soundscape here, and really interesting sounds. Some parts sound like the strings could use a bit of a cleanup. The choir break is a very nice addition, the double timpini roll could be changed a bit.

2:00 Quad Strings
Great french horn and the buildup of drums. 2:21 has a great high drone.

Really effective for a trailer. The strings could use more modulation, and it would be nicer to see less artificial crescendos. The part for the lead soprano is fantastic. Paul Houseman, another guy you should check out, I rated his works a 9.0. In terms of composition, I think you out beat him, but because of his technical know-how and production techniques, he creates a more emotional environment. I rate compared to the people I have rated in the past. With London Symp, or maybe any Sym playing this, with a bit better male lead, this would be approaching 9.5 for me.

Wow! This is increadible! Very professional! Comparable with Denny Elfman or Hans Zimmer... First you meet vocal chanting like in Enigma's songs...then enter female soprano like in the Gladiator movie...sounds mystiqueand then it all turns to highly tensed orchestral sound track...like in Blizzard's movie "Call to Arms" Admirable...a MUST download...
