This one might write some history lately. The first track of the new group Plantbane! The main part contains goa styled synth lines, but the other part of the track contains something different. "The last ingredients" takes you into the world of goa and chillout. All combined into one piece. Just take a listen and hear for youself. Let yourself taken by the vibes of the unknown.

I start listening with a minor fear inside my mind: Quite often artists that make good psychedelic chillout, end up making mediocre, soulless psytrance with no original or especially interesting ideas. Well, presumptions aside, and on to the song.
The first thing that pops into my mind is that the production is a bit too strerile for my taste; I would enjoy a bit more roughness. This is a problem with the majority of modern psytrance.
The song does have originality. The dub part at two minutes was refreshing. There are synths sounds that sound quite tasty, but I would love to hear more modulation and brave steps into the unknown. Now I can't help the feeling that this is too cautious to get me "that" feeling. Too much VST synths maybe, what about some genius sampling from unexpected sources?
There are some good melodies but very little of interesting or original rhythms. I'm thinking of more layered, perhaps polyrhythmic composition of the rhythm area.
Also, there's a lack of dynamics, there's no real life in the progression of the song. It's just mechanical patterns one after another. More organic elements, perhaps. I really enjoy music that has that certain sort of "psychedelic" structure and flow; in psytrance two good examples are Hallucinogen and Psychopod.
Although my review was somewhat critical, I did not find the song a bad experience, it just didn't have the soul that would take me back over and over again, wanting more.
I hate to give these numeric reviews, no song really deserves a bad one because music is just more than numbers. But, whatever, they force me into it |

Like I said before, this is probably the best / most interesting goa track I have ever heard. As a general rule I dont like goa trance, since most of it is the same crap, predictable, unoriginal. But theres one thing that I have learned from both of you guys, you are not the same crap, you are not predictable.
From the very beginnings of the track the melody floats free above what is expected. Where I look for simple repeating riffs from the melody it goes somewhere else, higher and higher. Very nice and dreamy , and then even when the melody descends back down its not easy to predict. Then for once I hear a snare roll I like! Somehow its irregular and completely throws me off beat when the kick comes in. For once a snare roll is used as a tool to move the song, rather than some standard crap people just keep using because they think its cool.
Now I will complain I dont like the kick... I feel something more bassy and "earthy" would have been nice. But the beat moves on and its very driving. I really start to like it around :50 , very powerful. Bassline is simple, but with purpose I think as later the variations seem to have more power. I love the little hint of sound to come at 1:06. Next minute is very good, bassline really works well to drive it home. Lead is wonderful and only halfway predictable.
1:45 the song flips over on its head. Very nice use of melody here variated and detailed, reggae/pop like chords a bit cheesy. Kick comes in as snare, all weird and exciting. Then the kick takes over and I feel this is all defusion happening here. But then at 2:48 I dont know who come up with this part, but I love it! This is where the track really starts to become something great IMO. Wonderfully progresses and gets better and better each damn second. Repetitive enough that I can start to follow, but then all these damn variations come from all directions and completely own. ( sorry but I never use the word own, but this really OWNS ) Completely dominates anything I have ever heard in goa, or trance for that matter, ever.
4:18, some woman starts rambling around now. Don't know whats she's saying, I drown it out. I'm married, I do this all the time. I just dont like this part. I dont get it. Flute comes back in and makes some interesting things happen, but the track is really losing its momentum now IMO.
5:37 do I hear my favorite part coming back? Well it filters in and its not what I was expecting... this time a very simple and repetive riff. But damn the effects here are great, wonderful "orchestra hit" type behind it all. Once again a very unique sound and atmosphere. Unfortunately it doesnt progress and only starts to break down. And then the woman starts up again. I just want her to shut up!
Well the song is done, and I truly like. Now I must listen again and wait for 2:48 again!
I rate this song so highly because there is no goa track IN THE WORLD that i like better. Maybe it even deserves a 10, but I reserve that for songs that make me cry or at least choke up. Not feeling like I'm about to choke up today. |

Hey there!
Ok, I can do one review before I go to bed
I have to say, damn this is one complex and well thought out track! Javier called it overwhelming which describes it pretty well. You can listen to this one about 15 times and you still find new little details. I don't really care if goa is supposed to be like this, all I can say is that I sense massive creativity here First things first:
The intro immediately caught my attention. Some nice effects and filtered synths get you in the right mood for things to come. When the kick enters there's already pretty much going on (I hear kick, 2 bass lines, 2 synth lines, strings... if I'm right?). It's hard to make out every single channel but I don't have the feeling the sound is messy or too crowded. Instead I think all the little melody lines go really well together and create a nice and full overall soundscape Ok, so much for my impression after the first 30 seconds
The song goes on like that for about 20 seconds and we already get a new element At 0:52 I thought you entered a new bass line but it was a 303 synth that got filtered all the way up until the chords change at 1:19. Things get spacey like Javier said and I hear a familiar synth... Hale Bopp preset from Vanguard? Even if it is recognizable I still love that synth and it fits very well Plus the little melody it plays is great!
Now we get to the best part! Who of you arranged that flute? It sounds like you played it on a MIDI keyboard or something. My respect if you actually typed those notes in the piano roll As a matter of fact it sounds like you improvised here No matter where that melody comes from, it's great and the flute sample with the large reverb certainly does its job well And that reggae-like piano actually works here. Of course the kick on the 3rd beat is a little too hard if you look at this part objectively but it helps keeping you close to the actual feel of this track. So, again I must say you made this work
My complaint here would be the position of the break. The flute break really takes things down and it is the softest part of the entire song. I think it came a little too early considering the song length. Hmm, when I look at the structure it seems very difficult to make out a decent pattern here. You have many different and short parts after another and I can't really make out a climax part. If I had to pick one I'd say at 2:59 which is directly after the break... Hmm, maybe you should forget what I said about the misplaced break then. You obviously made up your own "rules" and it works, it makes the track more demanding to the listener which is always a good thing in today's world of uncreativity I just feel the song get's interrupted too quickly and my first impression was: Put that break more in the middle or add a similar break in the 2nd half of the song
Enough about that, we still have much elements to cover, like the "climax", the first part that really gets going The piano is still playing softly in the background. I would have left it out after the break. I think it sounds a little misplaced with the other driving elements that add a lot of tempo. It keeps playing til 6:52 and I think you could have replaced it with something else... As I said, it sounds great in the break and does a lot for the rhythm in that part but not in the rest imho. However the lead synth in this climax has a wicked sound to it playing a wicked melody Great stuff! The changing sound of the synth makes it even more interesting and that distortion that starts to come out at about 4:10 is a nice way to take it out again.
The next part which Javier called his favourite part would be my 2nd favourite part after the break in the beginning Things get smoother and cleaner while still keeping the tempo with the kick and bass line. That voice is awesome though I don't understand a word But it is very professionally mixed And the nice chords and melodies in the background make this even more enjoyable! And yay! The flute is back A different melody (of course!) and unfortunately a little short (of course ) but really nice to listen to before the 2nd big climax in the end.
The melodies in the ending part were not at good as in the middle climax but the new synths still added something new to the track. Perhaps you just wanted to take the track out this way... Coz the melody in the beginning sounded surprisingly repetitive considering the rest of this little epos The synth basically plays the same til the end where it gradually gets modulated and faded out accompanied by the vocals... Can't complain about the outro, I don't have the feeling that something was missing
Actually I get the feeling I got more than you'd need to fill one song You had the ingredients for 2 or maybe even 3 tracks and you put them all together which came out pretty nice imho Of course it's more demanding for the listener and the structure can be best described as a ABCDEFG pattern Nothing repeats itself which holds just one problem: The listeners favourite part won't be repeated either. So for someone to really enjoy the track you need to make every part equally interesting or build the whole thing up to make each element more exciting than the one before. If I see this right you went for the first option which was pretty brave but worked out all right I must admit that the break with the flute melody is my favourite part and I'm kinda disappointed that it is over so soon but you left me with enough interesting material that you kept me listening til the end. It could have also turned out the other way but in this case creativity won
Ok, enough said The artists show a great amount of creativity and ideas plus the will to do something new. People might have to get used to this kind of music if your other projects will have similar ideas but people will also like this as long as they are open-minded So, just keep them coming, I think CTG is ready for your style I'll rate this 9, mostly for creativity and details which are all put together in a very decent sound quality (sorry to drop your rating of 9,5 )
...ouch, 45 minutes later Time to get to bed...
Good job guys! |

I listened to this a few times now and i think it's about time this track gets a review.
This is a pretty weird track (like you would expect from the genre) with an unique sound and lot's , and i mean LOT'S of elements.
This could be a little overwhelming for some people , for me too , at first.
When i listened to it for the second time i noticed a lot of new things and after listened to it even more this track got even more special.
The first part of the track is very spacy , i don't listen to goa much so i can't really say if i should call this part goa or not
My favorite part is starts at 1:48 with that great sounding flute , and from there it think the best part of the track has yet to begin.
That would be @ 4:18 where the vocals starts , great vocal and instruments to support.
This ''break'' is probably my favorite part.
Again that great flute starts playing , i love the sound of it , very good work.
And from there the track gets harder again with elements of the first part , combined with the vocal.
It must have been a lot of work creating this track , you can hear influences of both artists and i think they work perfect with each other.
I give this a 9.5 , and i don't think i overrate.
I look forward to more tracks from Plantbane .

Great stuff, and definetly worth a download for every psy-freak out there.
The flute sound didn't strike me - it needs a sharper sound imo. But the melodies were fantastic, very.. Shpongle'ish.
And the part at 6:00-> just kicks arse.
All in all, great work - not quite polished enough to deserve a 10-rating, but definetly worth a 9. |
