The Dance Around the Hourglass Tower
----------------------------------------------

Second piece of music from Vernoma Street.

Review this song! - Song Reviews (7):

ArtistDer Klavierspieler (classical) 08 Feb. 2011
I love this piece! :bravo:

The melody reminds of Grieg, especially of "I Dovregubbens hall" from "Peer Gynt."

I love the melody and the variation. At first I didn't like the variation but after a few more listens I've decided that I do like it.

The accompaniment sometimes made the rhythm unsure, I would watch out for this.

I liked the ending, what with the repetition of that theme from the melody, it seemed just right for a piece of this sort.

Overall, I liked it very much. I hope to hear more stuff like this!

Der Klavierspieler

Postscriptum: After another month or so and a few more listens I decided I like the variation. Great piece!

I love this piece man. I love everything I've heard by you. Nice intro. and some of the parts remind me alot of the monkey island theme.. (the end notes, if you know what I mean) ...

Anyway, soundquality is great, and the piece is overall creative and original with its choice of instruments. The arrangement is.. what can I say.. loves its.. I get this nice feeling of sitting down on a sunny beach and just having a drink and laxing.. Maybe thats just me. Anyway, Great tune. Dont know what to say caus its already pretty great. Coudlve been a little longer, thats it ;) But then again, its a part of something bigger..

Coolies, nice little phrases combined with interesting, and by that I mean good, drum work.

The changes in beat works especially well in my opinion. The melody and acc. flow well with these changes which makes this a joy to listen to. I just wish it were a bit longer! ;)

Overall it shows good control and timbre. :)

Hmm, a lot of good stuff here. Actually the only thing that kind of disturbs is the construction is maybe too 'scattered'. It's like the melody is changing on/off for 5 secs at a time. I'd say the song doesn't 'flow' well, and I'm not talking about the time signatures. In the earlier Vernoma Street song, and mostly in your other songs, the themes and ideas follow each other quite nicely, and each theme is given enough time and space (I really hope this makes sense to you). And one little thing, the 'blues'-note around 1:15 breaks the folk feeling for a sec to me.
The sound, melody and overall feeling surely make it a nice song, so 6.5 it is.

I must say that this was extremly suprising to get, and in a very joyfull way!!

What cathces me first, is that it sounds so live.
Now Zepsi tell me it IS live (exept drums & bass), wich, OMG, is GREAT! There´s a hunting feeling over this track, and I can understand where the title of the track came from.

(I can agree with Lord Wallace about that the mix can sound a little dry from time to time, and maybe just a little more reverb would have done the trick?)

The main melody wich is played by the accordion is one of thoose that you just have to like, whatever you like. It get´s to you straight away, and im sure I will have it on my mind for a long time. The rythem in the track is real sweet, makes me wanna dance just as much as a good reggaetrack does! =)

0:31, some background "noise" (sounding like tirebrake something) joins the accordion, low in volume, but does alot to the track. All these small changes are very importent for the track, and all background instruments do the jobb very well!
Everything is well balanced in the track, both volume and panning. Nothing is overdone, and there is no experimental playing in the production, so all your sences can focusate on the music itself.
The track is a little short I think, even though this sort of music Is usually short, wich is a little sad.
I would have liked a little more ;)
Great work!

Very nice tune, with traditional stylings and instrumentation. I like the rhythmical aspect of this piece, particularly the contrasting time signatures.
The main theme of the tune is developed throughout, culminating in some very interesting and complimentary organ work, and a nice dynamic change towards the end.
If I may offer one criticism, this tune would benefit from a more live-sounding mix, rather than a dry studio sound, particularly the drums.
Very good work.

Thanks for the review Der Klavierspieler, much appreciated. :)

Thanks for the review timfarman. This one was made with a combination of an acoustic guitar, an accordion, some hardware synths and some software. The piano comes from GPO in fact, but I didn't use any more instruments from it in this one, though I'm sure I'll let it play a bigger part in future releases.

Of couse the contrast in rhythm/flow should be like they are now (sounds fantastic btw). I think JDruid was putting too much of his own taste for music into that review.

Awesome work anyway!

Thanks JDruid. The contrasts in the rhythm/flow is a significant part of this piece, but I understand that it might not be to everybody's taste.
