Funny... not long after I was ridiculed for daring to suggest that us sceners might want to start donating money to keep our favorite sites alive, both the Hornet Archive and the Nectarine tracker music audio stream were saved by... *gasp*... sceners donating money to keep their favorite sites alive. Meanwhile, Homemusic.cc closed down due to financial problems. But nah, that couldn't mean my old Novus Manifesto was actually right, could it? Of course not.

Click. Read. Think. It just might change the way you look at the tracking scene.

I never thought Novus Manifesto was a bad idea, but I really don't think money was the most important thing that caused HM's collapse.

You are correct in that it wasn't *the* cause, but it was one of the causes. The site goes into a little more detail on that. For attention-span purposes here, I had to go with an abridged explanation. :)

Clicky-clicky... and don't forget to look for the update to the Manifesto.

wow, you seem kind of ticked in that article. Anyway...

while Ace never seems to like to discuss money, I think he knows he has people here who will support him, I have even suggested I would pay monthly for this site.
It's definately become an important part of my life and I couldnt bear it if I woke up one morning and ctg couldnt be found! The one day it was offline a few months ago freaked me out bad enough.

wow, you seem kind of ticked in that article.

That's mainly just lingering frustration from my first attempt at spreading tha' word. I was well-prepared for honest debate and disagreement. Instead, in many cases what I got instead was pointless nit-picking and people who almost seemed to be intentionally missing my point. (A good chunk of the disagreement was well thought-out, but it was disappointing how much of it was of the other variety.)

See, here's what ya do... ask for his snail-mail address under some pretense of wanting to send him something on paper that you can't e-mail, and then mail him a 5-spot instead. What's he gonna do, send it back? :D

Anywho, thanks for the feedback!

Well hey, nobody ever said that the ability to fill endless pages with text corresponded with any actual degree of intelligence. ;)

but Ace... send me your address of even better a paypal request... and I'll send you a little something.

I second that motion!

Heck, what I need to do for my own site is get contact info together for major scene sites so that people can send in donations more easily. A few sites are already set up for that, but most aren't. And heck, even if people are too proud to ask for money, I'm sure as heck not too proud to ask on their behalf. :eyes:

I've seen many sites with a paypal button! Just get an account with them and set up a button. You wont have to say anything.. the more generous thankful people (with accounts) can send you money instantly.

isnt it kinda obvious that large sites require funding?

i mean..the bigger the community..the bigger the servers your going to need..
they dont come for free.

sorry if i 'miss your point' but why write a whole story about it..?
i figured it was a known fact already..

Here, I'll be glad to clarify. :) People know these sites cost money. What people don't realize is exactly how MUCH money these sites cost. A lot of people were surprised by my Static Line interview with Mysterium earlier this year where he stated that TiS's expenses were $25,000 per month. Of course, that was with massive file hosting and bandwidth requirements, but even a site like CTG gets a large amount of traffic, and thus needs some sizable storage and bandwidth of its own.

That's why you see so many big sites close down; the owners start it out as a labor of love and don't mind shelling out the money for it, but then Real Life attacks, they can't keep it open anymore, and it shuts down. Even when a smaller site like Altered Perception goes down, that means a lot of music simply disappears, never to be seen again by the scene.

Sceners can help stave this off by opening up their wallets and donating a dollar or two to their favorite site. It can be an archive. It can be a group site. It can be your favorite artist. It can be a programmer for your favorite utility. Whatever. Pick a site you want to support, and send 'em a dollar. If 100 people do that, that's $100 less that the webmaster has to pull out of his pocket.

It can work... that's exactly the sort of grass-roots support that saved Nectarine and The Hornet Archive when they hit emergencies. But why wait for an emergency? Why not just do it regularly?

Buy one fewer can of beer this month, and there ya go. C'mon, beer's not good for you anyway. And what would you rather have: another beer, or your favorite tracking website? :lovemusic:
