I'm not 100% sure... I think the original is made by Ultrabeat and is a new song, but sounds very much like 80's New Wave music. You can say whatever you want but that's my favourite style of all music

yeah tastes, but when you talk about best trance song, it's weird that the best ones are those which are the less trance ;)
btw.. i'm a sucker for 80's synthpop, that's were my electronic music loving got startted..

Yeah well, you know, guess there exist as many tastes as there exists humans. But me personally prefer songs with nice melodies performed by synth-leads, human voices, or whatever..... As long as the music fits my taste. Sometimes voices with words (singing) could even rise the feeling of melodys, but sometimes an ordinary instruyment are more suitable I guess.

yep, there are as much opinnions as there is asses, and they all stink ;)
but my opinnion is that trance music works best without vocals, it's something which doesn't need vocals, because of the hypnotic feel driving rhythm and mind blowing melodies.. if you add vocals they might take too much of your attention and then you don't really appriciate the rest of the track..
but for example, rock is a genre that needs vocals to be interesting imo..

I agree, I think. It's a strange combination... But I dont think people call it trance?!

well most people do... when you ask in forums to list best trance, they just copy the last playlist of A state of trance by armin van buuren... and that stuff usually isn't trance anymore... the genre has developed to a direction that it doesn't even have much connection to where it got startted..

Trance isn't my favourite genre, but when I listen to music I listen to it as a piece of music and not as a piece of genre :) So maybe I thought I found the vocals in the "trance" song suitable, althought it maybe shouldn't be called pure trance.

Very true. It started seriously back then.

Yeah... The question is, why has it?

hmm intresting..
well i think myself as a person who would be happy if everyone kept producing the 98-00 style trance nowadays too, but i guess you would get fed up with that too, every song would start to sound too similar..

and guess one attractions of trance has been it's fresh sound, and i think many people want it to stay fresh and bring up fresh ideas..
but now somehow it's startting to evolve to something that is more close to another genre..
well that's pretty much what happened to synthpop too... there are only few indie groups and amateur scene musicians who produce that nowadays, so i guess same is about to happen to trance..

the most sad part is that now the 99 style trance is getting big in mainstream first before the total disappearing...
and as that it wouldn't really mind, but the form it's getting for mainstream, vocal adds and lenght packing to shorter form, it's just not the same any more..
one of the main attractions in trance is the progression and building ups...
the feeling you get teased, you need the melody but they wait wait and wait and wait until they bang it to your face and the euphoria starts..

Some thoughts:

I liked that age when trance was just an underground style, what everyone called trance at around 95 that wasn't similar to "nowadays" trance... Trance started from techno and goes it to psy and goa, and there was much great song with great, typical "spacey" atmosphere. That was the "golden age" for me. Then "dreamhouse" and other commercial things are absolutely f***ed up the whole scene, 'til the dutch artists arrives. First I don't like that songs and sound (for example: System F.- Out Of The Blue, Armin - communication)... but at the last 2 years I dig myself into this sound and I found it more interesting than it seems to me at first sight...
Overall: the trance-scene is bigger than ever and it means good and bad things:
bad because there are a lot of crap, some DJs and artists are as overhyped as Britney Spears, and money makes artist to write only cheap top-trance hits, and it blocked their creativity...and good things: very much people trying to make trance, and because of this big numbers there is bigger chance to find some creative, upcoming artists...so there is much more crap but much more talents...just more difficult to find them...

in my opinnion "system f - out of the blue"
was a song that totally kicked the melodic trance genre to new grow..
it was the first to introduce the jp8000 supersaw sound :)

also i'm a big fan of old trance style too... and one of my new projects will have that style in it.. but the biggest problem is that those old trance songs are pretty badly produced, not many of them really kick or drive as good as the trance nowadays. also the tempo was a bit too fast back then...

my opinnion about bpm:
house 120-130
progtrance 120-140
melotrance 130-145
hardtrance 140-150

hardhouse is usually done in 140-150 bpm but can be played in 160 or even 170

and then there is genres that start from 140 and can go as far as 1000bpm
like hardcore...
from where speedcore is usually 1000bpm

hardstyle is usually around 140 BPM. really funny when you know how hard that music is.

It seems like all this is just a natural process after all. What came after Synthpop, you think? According to my opinion, it seemed like it splited up in two parts in the beginning of the 90's; 1) pop with less synth and more instruments that was popular before the 80's and 2) dance (typical disco music), like synthpop but more simple and more repetative sound (with a more noticable 4/4 beat)... Imho which was a bit tragic because I found the combination that was popular in the 80's perfect :p

Trance was a genre of its own in the middle of the 90's, and it was, like Miraculum says, more in the "underground" scene. I thought Goa-trance was even more popular... A cool new genre back then, based on synths again, but this time without vocals and with a noticable 4/4 beat - only a bit fatter. Only the last years I've heard a lot of people talking about trance in real life. I guess it could be the same as the underground music, but without long built-ups and without the psy-sound and more a catchy sound... It is more like to the point directly, like the early 90's dance.

Bah, this was confusing :?: But I tried to write down my thoughts...

actually the nowadays electro pop, britney spears, madonna etc...
is an evolve of synthpop, but with a lot of borrowed stuff from ug scene, since the producers have been part of it some time, like mirwais..

anyway eurodance envolved from house, about the same time trance and techno envolved from it... start of 90s...
it was to commercial form of it..
