This. I really like the idea that a website like CTG is coming back together, but this question above needs to be answered. We can all write impressive idea's on great websites, and we may dream about the bright future that a site like that could have. However, when nobody is going to write it, then what's the purpose? I dont want to temper the excitement, but lets start with the most important thing first.

Cooth, I dont understand a shit of coding PHP, but realize that Ace hardcoded nearly everything. So even small facelift is a hard day task. Iäm not sure about MySQL data, but sorting it properly by ne routines need probably a LOT of work. Who's gonna do that?

Yes, I do realize that. I just assume if CTG should be refreshed, rewritten or anything, the data can and should be taken and adapted as well. At least the interesting data. Of course, any attempt at rewriting CTG with or without its existing data has to be a big task, which is probably not feasible at this point. |

This is not that difficult to do.. I can do that by writing a simple php script that will export existing data and insert it in a new way, no worries about that.. This is not a problem, you better start thinking about other things like hosting, design or promotion..

So there.
Yes, AmBeam, data itself may not be a problem, but rewriting the site will be time consuming. It's easy to start, not necessarily easy to pull off to the end.
I kind of think there is still no consistent vision of this site and thus it seems to be too early to start a major rewrite. I don't think such a vision will appear in random forum talks, so I guess a couple of people should do some groundwork and put out a fairly specific plan to discuss.
Even in its best days, CTG music had very few downloads, which was a source of frustration for some musicians and a proof that vision and targeting are important. So far, CTG was a platform for amateur musicians, a kind of workshop, not a popular music source visited by the audience (just that nobody really thought about it). That can be sustained or changed, but it should be explicit. |

You're right. And a workshop CTG should stand I guess, cause other goals are not only very much crowded (soundclouds etc.) but also needs a heavy business idea, money-making logic, wich we aren't (imo) after. I've had a rough idea for CTG and that simply is what we already have here with an upload feature, review rating and simple thumbs up/down for tracks. Community section....I have nothing to say, forum is crucial and links we can dumb. Charts should be in music section. And everything should be linkable to social medias like facebook (wich practically is internet inside internet ;D ) and all players should be able to embed smoothly everywhere just like in finnish Mikseri.
Dropdown menus are useless, since you can browse on from each page so more is less here. For a site there isnt much to rewrite, I think biggest issues hide on database, how to adapt archives to day? |

I know it will be time consuming, but which way is better - to work with existing code or write it from scratch?
We have time, we have more time than we think . CTG is dead for about 2-3 years, it can wait another one year till we start the promotion.. But if we do something let's do it good!
I can create a folder on my server, so we can start working togheter with the code. It would be cool if we get more than one coder over here. Then we can use skype or some chat to talk about framework/CMS we will use (or make), install some svn and start to work with new version of Cute Trance Girls (in a free time). There's no need to hurry, let's just be constructive .

Before any databases can be adapted into a new website/system, all broken and non-working links should be erased. I could try and help with that one. I actually already have started (by going through the songs and reporting bad links), but it's a slow process since we have tons of tracks added here
Autio & Maattala - Aidee [wavedata records] - Out now!
Solar Emotion - Distant Visions (valve remix) [wavedata records] - Out on now!!

Tell me about it!
a method that I find effective:
when a broken link is found go to the artists page and do a scan of all their songs links.
there's a good chance that an artist with one broken link has more.
valve and I will have this place swept up in no time.

Another good suggestion is when somebody receives a PM, gets on of their songs reviewed, etc. CTG should have an automatic mailing system which will send an automatic email to the artist's email address notifying them. For example, if somebody PMs me, I will get an email titled something like "Message" I will go ahead and make my own message which would work perfectly...

Instead of "user", we would state the member's name. But this is just an example.
And for safety reasons, we could add a little disclaimer.

I'd make a good idea generator! I do believe we should definitely have something like this in place so people don't forget about CTG music. |

Okay guys, I freakin' went crazy on my brainstorming for ideas. I personally think these are all GREAT ideas....
Top 20 reviewers on the front page - is refreshed weekly
Paid memberships?
Image uploading for the purpose of sharing - members would also have the ability comment on images as well as rate them.
Blogs (although diaries are much the same)
popular tags
Group support for multiple members of CTG - some good example would be Trackers at work, Dimlight Ally Crew, if you remember them (to create a group, you need a membership? This would be a way to generate income)
Featured Artists/Members
Better member search (ie: age range, state, gender, etc.)
A more personalized home page (the ability to add your own background, a section for likes/dislikes, etc.) Another feature of a paid membership to do more things with your page.
Most recent people who viewed your page.
A store??? (Could we sell turntables, studio equipment, software, etc.?)
A live chat implemented in the website itself (no more remote irc crap)
Instant Messenger (You can message people who are in your "friends" list that are online)
The ability to hide your profile so that only your friends may see it.
The ability to add members to a personal favorites list of yours.
Invite (This is a good way to spread the word! There could be a form where you can enter in your friends' email addresses and CTG will send a message saying they should join!)
Member rating - You can rate members on a scale from 1 to 10. 1 meaning you don't like that person at all, and 10 meaning he/she is one of the coolest people you know on CTG.
Implemented video support on the forums - meaning you can add a YouTube video so people could just click the "play" button instead of visiting the actual YouTube page.
Forum Ranks (1 star, 2 stars, etc. depending on how many posts you get.)
You're automatically a VIP member if you joined within the first three years of CTG (2002-2005)? - Better yet, if we get a beta site up, you could be a VIP member if you were around/signed up during the beta phase. |
Please let me know what you think, and if they would be possible! |
