| I would like to request that we re-enable artist/member registration. Allowing new users to sign up is a key approach in expanding the community! |

I wish it was that easy and it would've been enabled a long time ago.
The problem is, that when I enable registration, I get 300+ spam registrations a day, of which 20+ post garbage on the forums. With all this, I might get 2 or 3 actual registrations in a week span but probably less. Unless we can find a way to properly protect ourselves from spammers, I'm not going to enable registration. I've tried about 20 different protections by now, and they've all been beaten.

Decade old code has its drawbacks. This is the part demanding a total rewriting....
Odd and bizarre text here |

Years back, I remember registering for Modplug and in order to reach the registration, you required a username and password was needed. Have you tried this approach? |

Haha, I actually invented that protection. You see, I'm also the admin of modplug.
The problem is, that the code is so much tangled that I can't implement this without it requiring extensive testing. Since I have been unsuccessful in getting the code+db to run locally, I can't make extended changes without risking the site to show all kinds of errors.
I suppose, that if the staff agrees, I can put the entire site offline temporarily so I can work on the code directly on-site. This is tricky business however that I'd like to avoid if possible.
But indeed, if I am able to implement this, then its quite probable that the registration problem has been fixed. For as long as we used phpBB at modplug which was for quite some time, that approach has worked all the time, with no failures whatsoever.

The site has been in maintenance mode for the past 30 minutes, and while I put it there, I have added the login protection system I used on modplug.
Yes, registration is enabled again. Lets see of spammers still can't get through, or that they finally found a way to get past.
