Ok, I guess no one else will start this so let me do that ;) .

I wish old users will post here with their ideas, I don't want to change the site completely (that means the colours, menus, forums etc..), but as most of you know - I want to rebuild the whole site, so I think their opinion is most valuable for me as a coder. CTG will be still online, but we all start to make new version on another server, and after its done we will replace the existing page. It may take several months, but it's worth waiting if there are still people that care about CTG.

Do you have any suggestions, ideas, maybe some design propositions? Post it here! Let's make a difference! :)

btw. it looks like I'm the only coder over here who wants to participate in this project, if you don't want me to do that, you think 1 person is not enough or anything else, let me know. I won't do anything without permission from CTG staff..

The biggest concern I would have is this: make sure that when you register, spambots don't get in, but normal users do.

This is a really difficult task and should get you started. Tackle this, and the rest is peanuts.

Here is what you can expect:
- Spambots will be able to activate their email
- Spambots will register but do not post yet.
- Spambots that manage to register and activate their account will start mass posting upto weeks later
- Spambots can beat captcha
- Spambots can beat simple form questions.
- There are different form of spambots. The simple ones that you can easily stop by simple protection such as captcha, and the really advanced ones that are as tough as above.
- Spambots will not find you if a search engine won't find you. But if a search engine won't find you, so won't new users.
- If a site is popular enough, a team will program the spambot engine to beat your site.

- If you make a protection that is so good a spambot can't beat it, make sure to test that people in normal browsers can beat it (test multiple browsers and different security settings, including mobile browsing!!!) If you make exclusions for a mobile version, know that a spambot will exploit that.
You can ask me hundreds "why don't you" questions, answer will be, because it works that way too. - xTr1m

but take a look at facebook, soundcloud and others more popular websites than CTG. They have it already solved. I don't know if the spambots can go through AJAX registering, hovewer there are some solutions but how to test them?

We can block several IP's if they seems to be spambots.

Blocking several IP's is not the answer, I know that from experience. A spambot will very likely not use the same IP the next time they register. But if you can figure out how facebook and such are protected and you can implement that, sure. We need that.

Another option I'd consider making is to disable the feature allowing our friendly "guests" from posting comments, etc.

Also, another idea..... In order to download, view, artist pages/songs you must be a member. As a guest, your only options are to freely view the forums, charts, and whatever else. This would keep the page view/download counter accurate.

As far as spamming goes, there's not much we can do except moderate what happens. I'd say keep the Recatchpa thing on the registration for sure. Email activation would definitely help.

On another thought, would it be possible to block any user agent string with the word "bot" in it?

It sounds like you never have had to deal with a spamissue before. Moderating the spam is a daytime job if you just let it happen, and it looks really ugly. If it can be avoided, its a must!

You can block a useragent if they have the word bot in it, but that will keep out search engines, and not spambots. The result is that if a spammer knows you already, he'll come back, but your search engines who actually need to come will not find you anymore. Google has googlebot for example, and if google can't find your site, many others can't either as they rely on google, plus google is a famous one. Of course you could put google and other famous bots as exception, but bots will identify as various useragents anyway. I already looked at that. Mostly firefox internet explorer and chrome.

You're right! I've never dealt with something like this before! Sorry if I am "insulting" your intelligence as you mentioned that you tried 20 different approaches. Just trying to help!

Let's talk about design right now (we will discuss protection methods later). Do you have any ideas?

I'm not a designer, but I've made several projects just in case. Here is one of my latest projects for Silk, but this design wont be used. I don't like it much either ;) .

Anyway, this is the layout we can start with. If you have any proposals (what to change, to add or just reject it in all) post them here, you can also search for layouts on themeforest.net but almost 85% of them are veeery similar (header-slider-content-footer)..

You guys should seriously listen to LCP. Whats the point of focusing on re-designing when the spamproblem is in our way? Its better to focus on finding a solution to that imo.

Personally I don't see anything wrong with throwing out ideas about the new CTG layout and graphics. Of course spambot problem should be resolved first before we implement anything else. But there's no harm in designing stuff beforehand.

Some facelift I think would do good to this site, and AmBeams example showed some hint of what we should look for. If the graphics could be redesigned on top of the existing code, I believe it should at least be tried out.
