First now took a look at this topic, and I must say your doing a nice job AmBeam!
I do have a point to make about the site itself though. I know we can not do any fileshosting ourselves, which is one things other sites always have got going for them, and something that made CTG just a little less attractive for artists who want to release their music.
Is there any way that we could overcome this problem? Integration of other sites (like soundcloud, youtube videos etc), or something else?

Hi Wiseman! Long time no hear.
You got the point, I was thinking about the hosting and the only solution is to buy one.. We have no choice so after the page is done we need to interest some companies etc. or we just organize the collection (each month lol).. I wish I won't be alone with this problem..

I have space but am about to let it lapse as I now work for a design firm and am letting all my personal web business go.
However I have a friend who runs a for-profit forum where I live in the US who has his own hosting and I help him out occasionally with the technical stuff. I'm almost positive I could get free hosting for the site in exchange for my continued help and it would be a long-term thing considering he has ran this forum for nearly a decade, it's profitable and he enjoys doing it. |

If you're willing to do this, you must have damn good bandwidth and a damn good upload speed to do this with. If this server was coming out of the USA, it's going to be a speed problem for those in Europe. Latency is going to be an issue no matter what, but just something to keep in mind in case it isn't already. |

Sorry to tell you, but having a site hosted in the US is not a problem. Sure, download speeds might be lower, but latency is not so much of an issue. We're not gaming where every microsecond counts. At worse, it might have a delay of 0.1 second before it loads, but if you have a good browser with cache, it won't load the images twice. I have had my site hosted for quite some time in the US, and it was good enough. In fact, I still use that hosting, but I have a 2nd one in NL which of course is faster.
You can ask me hundreds "why don't you" questions, answer will be, because it works that way too. - xTr1m |

Hosting files on CTG servers sounds like a good idea to me, but I still would keep the possibility for an artist to host his/her own files wherever they wish to host them.
Personally I wouldn't want to upload my songs on several servers.
Autio & Maattala - Aidee [wavedata records] - Out now!
Solar Emotion - Distant Visions (valve remix) [wavedata records] - Out now!!

Hmm.. how about that:
We can offer some disk space (with limit) for each user, if he wants more he got to write couple of reviews/comments, do some activity or just pay some (that means we need to register CTG as a company?). Each user get his xxxMB space to upload his music and videos. After the file upload, user can associate it with "song profile" (created before) just by choosing the proper one. But he can also associate the "song prifle" with any else hosting or web he wants (this got to be checked regullary by moderators), so he can save some space here..

The further the distance of the server, the longer it's going to take for a packet to reach its destination. Good thing you bring up gaming as that's the only time this would really matter.
The bigger issue is still download speeds as you mentioned. |

Youre absolutely right. Most of musicians have their storages on clouds somewhere. We slept straight thru the years hosting was an issue, novadays its not that important. We should offer a limited space as suggested, but I believe its not critical issue. More important is people here, their opinions and will to give feedback |
