Youre absolutely right. Most of musicians have their storages on clouds somewhere. We slept straight thru the years hosting was an issue, novadays its not that important. We should offer a limited space as suggested, but I believe its not critical issue. More important is people here, their opinions and will to give feedback |
I agree. CTG hosting ourselves would be very nice of course, and would draw attention (SC for ex have, what is it, 200MB maximum?) but it is not the main problem. There are other hosts that musicians already use.
What we need to do efficient is integrate these hosts seamlessly into the CTG design if possible. To make "gadgets" from soundcloud (as an example?) fit well into the design. If there could be options to do this from different sources (also own FTP, or scene.org etc) that would be good.
But even thought it is expensive and maybe hard to come over, some sort of hosting would certainly (I believe this to 100%) draw some artists here that never would have shown up otherwise. I can only look at myself, who only stayed at CTG of all sites that DIDN'T offer hosting, but tried a lot! of sites that have hosting (and even though I don't visit them to often, most of my trax are still there on different sites). As some ppl have mentioned, there might be a slight possibility to look over some sort of hosting (never mind the latency, that is almost irrelevant), and this is something that should be looked into if the rebuilding of the site is fully serious and want to go 2.0.
I know we are all nostalgic. But we must be perfectly clear with that newcomers will not be. And they want freebies. Kind of easy. If they can't get it, there are plenty of other sites to go to instead... So my wish is that we at least integrate some of these other sites futures into the design. To get people interested today, we DO need to give them stuff. We are all (or most) of us already used to it, aren't we? If we get what we come for, then we are willing to give something back (as feedback).

Actually that is a pretty good idea. The ability to embed third party objects, like the soundcloud flash player, but I wouldn't see a reason why not to allow youtube videos either. I have a few videos of my music being played in its environment, and I even made a videoclip for one of my songs. Would be nice to use that.
Embedding is really easy, because all these sites give the embedding code, and there always is some code that links it to your song/video.
With some simple regex, you often can generate the code based on the url when you view it on the source site.
As for FTP, and other off-site linkage, you often can get to that file using http, so a link would work.
You can ask me hundreds "why don't you" questions, answer will be, because it works that way too. - xTr1m |

<<To all of you>>
Please don't get up with the page, I will take cover on the page code and design, you also have to do a large thing - to bring back its famous, to build-up the product, promote the page wherever it is possible.
Of course don't do it now , but you need to start to think right now! Let's do the noise!

I'm not a designer, programmer should not do that, but I had no choice . If you have any ideas I can send you .psd file with the project. Anyway a nice girl with headphones (only?) would be... nice .
