It depends on the connection speed you are on and the server's connection speed. The fact that it's FTP has nothing to do with how "unreliable and slow" it is lol.
Take for instance, my FTP server that I'm advertising. I currently have an FTP up, and my upload speed isn't exactly the greatest therefore some would think it's slow. If I were to use HTTP instead, I would still receive complaints about how slow it is regardless of the protocol.
