How about this?
I wonder if music can be any more stereotypical. This sounds so contructed and unnatural...

Genre's are a way to catagorize what music styles exists. It is not, and never will be a PREscription of what one should make. An artist makes what he or she want to make.
Thus, arguments such as 'now they are mixing dub-steb with trance' are irrelevant. Don't listen to what you don't like, and dont care if others like it.
Other then that, I think there's still good trance around. Its just getting a little more rare to find proper trance music nowadays..

I agree. There's nothing wrong at all with experimentation and combination. But considering that kind of crap to be Trance is purely bullshit and nothing more!
Armin Van Buuren once said this (in 2004): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjBZzN_Fzk

That is one famous interview. I like the old song you gave me, and I agree that 'drowing' is a pretty bad song. Did you know that Armin has a second project called 'Gaia'? Listen to this: Not that bad isn't it? (very recent song)
This one is only a year old or so....
Not all songs are as bad as that 'drowing' song there. In the past there were also songs that were really bad, it's just that we dont really remember them.
For instance, the following classic: AUTOTUNE!!! It has been released on black hole's label of In Trance We Trust, which was at the time THE top label for trance composers to be on. Comparable to armada nowadays. It is still owned by tiesto...
I know... its bad. It's actually quite on topic.
another example of bad music from the past. Do you know dash berlin? This is his old work. There. That was bad. This might be even worse.
Conclusion: bad music is made in all times, good music to. No reason to say that the old trance is better then the new trance...
The only thing I really mis from the past are the songs that have as much emotion as the songs on In search of the sunrise CD 1, 2 and 3. Those were golden. Here are two particular good ones with that kind of admosphere: Very old trance.. How about this as start of a CD?

I was aware of Gaia, however I've never heard much of it. I do remember hearing a track made my Gaia on a newer ASOT album and I really enjoyed it! But then again, it was the only decent song on ASOT (I'm thinking it was ASOT 2008, can't remember). Either way, that's not a bad song, but isn't great either. That's my opinion though. Like I said, there's nothing wrong with experimentation and mixing combinations of genres with other genres - that's what Electro music is all about! It allows people to open their minds and be creative with easy-to-access technology and just fuck around with it! I completely respect that!
I've always had a beef with Alice Deejay lol! I never could get into it. One of their songs was stuck in my head for the longest and still haunts me to this day!
I guess what I'm ripping on most is mainstream and commercial Trance. Over here in the states, I'm beginning to hear it on the radio. In Spokane, Washington, where I live, these stations used to play that typical soft Rock and that American mainstream garbage. Now, I'm hearing stuff identical to modern Vocal Trance. Oh, how ahead of my time I was. Now, teenage girls who enjoy this stuff have to ruin what was once good which irritates me to no end!
At least there's still plenty of old shit to discover! I hope the old saying "history repeats itself" will play a prominent role in this case. I've also heard a lot of new stuff which sounds good, but isn't popular so doesn't reach producers' ears.
You did bring up good points and I agree with everything you said. Also, thanx for including some sample tracks! |

Having some trancy sounds on a track doesn't make it trance
For example Alice Deejay. I hope no-one seriously thinks it's trance? To me it sounds more like pop music
But Analysis is right. There always has been and always will be good music and "bad" music. Despite of genres.
Autio & Maattala - Aidee [wavedata records] - Out now!
Solar Emotion - Distant Visions (valve remix) [wavedata records] - Out now!!

I agree with that. I remember about a year ago (my last year in highschool..thank heavens it ended !) people used to listen to some commerical crap like some weird song made by the Black Eyed Peas which was somekind of a mix between 2 Unlimited 's No Limits and the Mortal Kombat song (it was an electro house version...)
...guess how bad it was. Luckily ,I don't have to see those people each day now |

Well, the reason I used that song was to show you that not all trance artists create worse music as time progresses. He is one of the those that has improved considerably. I didnt try to argue that this was trance music...

it seems like any kind of art is going pretty shitty these dayz -music ,comic books ,movies ,tv shows.....
i watched Scream 4 yesterday (I wasn't suprised it was shitty..) which was pure crap. the main idea of making sidney's cousin as the killer was ok but the whole movie was just about teenage girls and their stupid cellphones and text messeges..it wasn't the typical scream movie and there wasn't any plot ...no intro no outro nor a dramatic turning point....wes craven sucks |

Did you read anything I posted at all? Sure that was a bad movie. But one bad movie does not justify the idea that 'any kind of art is going shitty these dayz'...

I don't think the world is coming to an end. There are a lot of stupid people and stupid things out there especially with the increasing mainstream popularity of the internet (Facebook and YouTube most notably.
However, there's always good shit out there if you're not in America. Over here, people are as stupid as they get. It's amazing how oblivious and careless of the world we are.
Edit: To make this seem like not so much of an offtopic, I meant to reply to Crystal Ball's post. |
