Basically you can't do this. You might be able to EQ most of the instruments out, but every instrument that plays within the frequency range of the vocals will remain there.
Autio & Maattala - Aidee [wavedata records] - Out now!
Solar Emotion - Distant Visions (valve remix) [wavedata records] - Out now!!

I agree with valve. It is impossible to get the vocals out of a track.

Well, it is possible. There is a way to get the vocal out of the song, this comes with phase inversion.
The phase inversion is a bit hard to get, or it was, because there are tools and powerful applications that can do the job for us. I remember the demonstration of new tool that was able to split whole track to single instruments (inc. vocals), everyone was impressed.. What I remember, the tool was expensive..

Yeah, I remember this technique.
Basically, what it does is splitting the wave file in several parts, and takes panning into account.
Then it calculates parts of the waveform that are present in both even if there's a small delay.
Vocals often are on both channels with a delay on one of them to give them this "out of the song" experience. Not all songs use this technique though, and some do it not just on the vocals but on other stuff too.
So theoretically it is possible, but its really hard to achieve yourself unless you have the proper tools.
If you want vocals from famous tracks, you might be better off looking for a sample cd who provides them for you. I know there are samplecd's out there that have the original singer sing those lyrics without any sound.
You can ask me hundreds "why don't you" questions, answer will be, because it works that way too. - xTr1m |

I actually remember asking something like this here years ago. I had to browse the archives trying to find it.http://www.ctgmusic.com/topic.php?id=7926
Sadly, it turned into a flame topic. Those who weren't involved in it said it was impossible. IDK, maybe things have changed since 2007. |
