History of Trance by Orkidea
http://www.facebook.com/HistoryOfTrance
No worries it's a very fair point
But are those tracks really trancey prog or really proggy trance? They are labeled as progressive house, but as many trance DJs have been playing that stuff I thought they have a place on that list. The influence of the likes of Deadmau5 and Prydz is quite significant to the current 128bpm "trance 2.0" sound we are hearing.
Also if you listen to the very early trance from 1992 etc you may notice how lot of that old school stuff is closer to Guy J or Henry Saiz than the uplifting 140 bpm stuff. They have that floating, atmospheric, hypnotic feeling which I associate with trance.
But as I said - it's a fair comment and strictly speaking your examples aren't labeled as "trance" |
Here is a link to a Facebook timeline of history of trance in it's many forms: progressive, vocal, uplifting, psychedelic, tech, acid, breakbeat, hard, commercial, deep, neo, underground and 2.0 trance.
http://www.facebook.com/HistoryOfTrance
Featured are twenty tracks per year from 1992 until 2011. Also included are some "prehistoric" tracks from the 70s and 80s, which I consider to have been influential for trance genre to be properly born in the early 90s. Synth pop, space disco, italo, balearic beat, hi-nrg, new beat, electronic body music and even modern classical musical all had their share in that creative chain.
This is neither a purely objective or subjective list, but something I wanted to put together as I think the history of trance music hasn't been that deeply documented. This is all made for the love of music and I hope that with help of this page you'll reconnect with some forgotten gems and will find some new ones too.
The idea for this has been living for years and the work for the current version under way for months and months. This is also a living and breathing project which will never be "ready" as such. So all feedback, addition suggestions and corrections are warmly welcome. Best way to send them is with a private Facebook message to the "History of Trance" page.
-With trancey regards, Tapio / Orkidea |

| Yes, I saw the link on facebook a while back...Nice list, but some of the tunes on that page was not considered trance when the tunes were released. They're techno tunes...However, over all a nice list.. |

True but things have changed so much since. I love these history of Trance things. Recently, Armada released some compilations of Trance music by year. Pretty cool idea.

True, things have changed a lot since then.....but it will be a cold day in Hell, before you ever get me to call The Prodigy - No Good a trance song. I don't think he has that song in there anymore, but he did....I did call him out on that one...But there are others. U96 - Das Boot was techno in 1991, and it's still techno in 2012...Don't care what new kid calls it today...I hope this don't make me sound like some arrogant, crabby, old man that is stuck in his way...but right is right, and wrong is wrong, imo...

New kids today? They would call it "gay" lol. I don't think a genre of a specific song should change like that. Maybe songs released under a certain genre may, but if Kraftwerk was considered Electronic music back in the 70s and they called it Rock today, that would BS. They should keep it under the Electronic genre.
Just an example, tho. I'm not sure how true that would be.

lol, what a minute...Are you saying that many of today's "trance" kids (well, that's what they call themselves) would call the U96 - Das Boot song gay?? Are you talking about the same kids who worship Tiesto, A&B, Armin, and Ferry?? Hey, imo, that U96 song was tight, especially when I first heard it in 1992... I still love that techno song! If it's that gay to you, maybe you should check out my Dark Room mix in my signature block...I like the dark stuff, too...Of course, I don't know you...My Dark Room mix may not be dark enough for you...Anyway, they made a real nice 2003 hard trance mix of the Das Boot song, too...I'll have to find that vinyl in my stash...
Oh, and U96 - Das Boot was released as techno.....Just about every vinyl shop in Europe still have it labeled as techno. Discogs even has it labeled as techno. Yeah, I know those guys aren't always right, but they are right about that song...Hell, if you even listen to that song, they say "techno" in that song a few times....Plus, listen to the beats and how that song plays out. It sounds just like old school techno. That song is techno. Just like the trance genre doesn't have one sound, the same can be said about the techno genre. There are many techno songs that have some sweet (well, imo) melody.

Maybe I'm too familiar with the culture where I live. In Washington, kids are surrounded by Rock and Rap and more recently, dubstep. People up here rip on anything else and those who differ in tastes. Besides, I haven't met many people in these areas who even know who Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, etc. even are.

OH!! I didn't know you were just talking about the kids in your area. I thought that you were talking about all the kids, today. But forget about the kids in your area, what do YOU think of Das Boot? Not your style?

Been so many years since I've heard that one lol. I actually had to look it up on YouTube as it's been so long. There's no doubt that it helped define EDM music to its characteristics today. Very classic and rather nostalgic for me lol. You ask if I like it? Of course!

The whole genre of techno is pretty hard to define anyway, there's a huge difference between the 80s original techno that Juan Atkins and Derrick May were doing, and the european techno sound in the 90s. Not to mention the late 90s techno sound, when it moved to more "loopy" repeating one bar sound.
Das Boot is a little bit too melodic to be techno in my book, but maybe some techno/house/dance crossover, doesn't really matter though.
There are great documentaries available on youtube if you're interested on the beginning of techno and house music. I especially recommend everyone to watch these two:
