Hi there!

I've a question concerning mastering (or at least a half assed attempt at doing so)

I created a track in FL 3 and would like to try and do some mastering in Cool Edit Pro. The problem is though, that no matter how I try to save separate things (kick, vocals, etc) they always end up the same size. So this would mean I'm working with about 15 files in one Cool Edit session. These files are all 80 MB in wav format. Wouldn't I end up with a HUGE MP3 file when finished? That's not good I think.

So what should I do? (I already used FX and stuff in FL... and to be honest how could I compose decently otherwise?)

Or is this normal and nothing to worry about?

Thanx in advance.

When you combine the wav files in to one mastered file with acid, you will have one file at the normal length of the song. and the length determines the filesize (mostly).
Have fun

You made my X-mas :D

I hope you're right. But why wouldn't you? I'll be sure to do this tomorrow. Now it's time to hit the irons and then we get christmas visitors.

Cheers, merry X-mas!

ok...

mastering is something you do to the final master track, the wav file exported from the program.. and mixing is something you do in the track while doing it, setting levels and panning etc..

i don't really understand why are you separating those kicks and basses etc...
just do your song in FL, put the volumes right there, compress the kicks and basses, add reverb delay etc..
then export the whole song as wav and turn it to mp3..
and that's it..

just explaine again what your problem is, so i might help you? now i didn't understand a bit what you ment :)

A good thing is to set a compressor on each channel.
Then you have good controll so no channel will make heavy changes in volume.

My setup is this.
Compress each channel (not every channel is neccesary, i use compressor on leads, kicks, basslines and maby if i make some fx stuff wich can be noisy sometimes)

A Master Compressor (in the master slot wich compress everything togheter and can create some nice effects)

Finaly i run my whole track through T-racks wich really cleans out the unwanted soundlevels

Merry Christmas :xsanta:

A Master Compressor
Finaly i run my whole track through T-racks

everytime you compress more than one sound the dynamics between these sounds disappear (volume differences)

a master compressor will take a lot of dynamics, and since you seem to do it twice and even use limiter... there isn't much dynamics left in your songs..
personally i hate flat limited songs, it might fit to a techno track...
and a good compress might bring some more drive and kick to the master, but it still takes off dynamics..

i hate the raising race in volumes, everyone just keeps limiting more and more their songs so the master volume is louder and louder, and ofcourse the dynamics are less and less..

my very good tip is, that if you don't know what to do with compressor and limitter don't do at all, they will fuck up your song..

for instance nothing is more annoying than a club track which will have a silent chill part but it's master compressed so hard that the strings are like fucking loud in that silent chill part :)

if you do the mixing well, compress every sound as their own (well sometimes you can compress for instance bassdrum and bass together so they won't get mixed, but for special accasions) and set the volume levels all well you don't need mastering at all..

my opinnion is that leave mastering to the professionals :) (actually some pros too can fuck up your track, if they don't know the genre ;) )

None of the described by a98 is "the good way" it is a "personal" way ..
Mastering should be done outside the software you compose in , save every channel , and put them into a "mixer setup" , this means open them all again at the same time in an other software and edit them the way you want ... this is the way it should be .

Anyway , let's not make it a "I master like this and that" topic but give the guy some advice , it is very clear he doesn't understand anything about mastering yet , so why not start with some basics and so on .... no need to talk about compressors and blah blah at this point I guess.
