How many times will the Patriots beat the spread?
Whoever gave the Patriots a 7 point spread doesn't follow football very much. So I figured I'd ask YOU how bad of a blowout it's going to be this Sunday.
Massacure in Houston, R.I.P. Panthers.

Very simple.
The field is 100 yards long, with goals on each end. The goal is to get the football down to the other team's goal, called the endzone. You get 4 tries, called downs, to do this. You can run with the ball, or you can pass it to someone. Every time you make at least 10 yards from where you started the first down, you get another series of 4 downs. If you don't make it to the endzone by 4th down, you have the option to kick a field goal, or punt if you're too far away. You get 6 points (touchdown) for passing or throwing the ball into the other team's endzone, or 3 points (field goal) if you kick it through a set of goalposts that at the back of the endzone. You can also score 2 points (safety) if you manage to tackle your team in their own endzone. After a touchdown, you get one try at extra points. You can take the safe way by kicking it through the goalposts for 1 point (extra point), or go for 2 points (2 point conversion) by passing it or running it into the endzone.
That's basically it. There are complex rules for stuff like where you can line up before the ball is given to the quarterback to start the play, rules for how you can defend potential ball catchers (receivers), rules for how you can tackle people (pulling the facemask on a helmet is dangerous, and thus brings large penalties), and all sorts of other things. Put that's the basis for American football. Which this year, the New England Patriots are the masters of.

I dunno much about those English names, but for me football is football, I mean soccer, but I guess the name soccer was made up to distinguish the "oldschool" football from American football... or whatever.
btw. why is American football called football if the players carry the ball in their hands?

Because they run with their FEET, silly.
Oh, by the way, Ron, I seem to recall in the 2002 Super Bowl that the St. Louis Rams, "The Greatest Show On Turf," walked into the stadium as heavy favorites... and then managed to lose anyway.
And oh, yeah, it was the Patriots who won that day.
The Patriots will likely win, but if you think the Carolina Panthers are easily intimidated, you might want to talk to Donovan McNabb of the Philadelphia Eagles first. He'll set you straight. And the Patriots that won the 2002 Super Bowl are much like this year's panthers: no real "stars," just a roster full of reasonably talented players that really click together as a team. And a team like that is dangerous in any sport.
Good grief, I'm debating sports on a tracking website. I'm an idiot, and I'm going to sit down and shut up now... |
