Good evening!
I've had a lot of thoughts about ways to pay artists (read get paid ) on the Internet. So a question arose: How do you feel about donating money to an artist in exchange for downloading his/her music for free?
Sincerely,

I think there is nothing wrong with this, but in my case i never paid for anything over the internet, either i dont have any suitable credit card for such cases so i simply find it to much work to get into this. If there would be easy way to do it, why not if artist has great music which i would like to hear it is worth of paying it offcourse for some reasonable prize.
But if you ask this as that you would like to earn money on internet, then i think it will be quite hard to earn some big amount of money, some people did it on mp3.com when their system was still quite proffitable for artists but nowdays it is a bit harder to find good and well known service for such things.
I think best way to do it is simply to offer all your music for free right away and simply gave people option to donate you money if they liked your music and if they feel like helping you that way. So that you dont directly request money for your music but keep it optional instead. |

That's exactly my strategy. So far it's played out just fine. (I have counted to a total of $0 )
If you do the trouble to get i.e. a PayPal account it is actually very easy to pay another person by PayPal.
However there seems to be a concensus in the fact that people are ready to pay for things on the Internet, but it's the time-consuming process of the actual payment transaction that many can't stand.

i think you dont loose much if you open a paypall and put it on your site. you never know.
though in theory donations are nice things, rarely happened to me to actually donate
but you never know, some mulitimillonaire might like your music and becomes your founder |

The answers lies perhaps partly in our own behaviour. So far I've used PayPal to do just one transaction. That was a donation to Nectarine Radio. It would be more practical if these micropayment systems would already exist where you could pay a few cents for a song without any hussle at all...

nah, i would not pay for song, rather i'd donate the artist...
i agree though, it is necessary, as we concluded earlier, scene eats money, scene needs to be founded in some way |

I don't seem to have stated my question right. It never was meant to be about paying the artist as such. This thread should be about donating to an artist at will.

I guess would probably donate if I had spare money and I would know the artist had troubles with their living or developing their talent.

Ok. There doesn't seem to be too many people around here who would consider donating for other artists music as a thanx for getting music for free. There seems to be another factor needed such as the one you stated Cooth about the artist having financial troubles. Hopefully though, we are not representative to the general public.

My philosophy (at the moment) is simple... If an artist lacks money for the equipment - synths, guitar, microphone, whatever they need to create their stuff, there is a sense in helping them, thus supporting art and people who devote to it and are too shy or too humble to demand money for it.
But if they make music for fun, not for a living, and they can afford all the expensive stuff, why not rather help somebody in _real_ need instead.
