anyone here good with FM synths.. for me they are way too complex, but i would love to learn how to tweak them. i have heard that with FM7 for example you can make pretty much any sound possible if you have the skills..
can anyone tell me the basics and theory of FM synths? and what do you think of Native Instruments FM7.. also feel free to post here sound examples of what you have made with it from scratch, i would love to hear.

If I remember correctly I think Hybrid Factor is using that synth a lot. Try to ask him. And as a second thing you could try to read a Getting started text file for more information.

I've had FM7 from proabably 2 years ( it was a gift from a friend who knew I was into electronic music ) I never knew it was a "VSTi" until recently, but its no use to me other than to play around with. IMO it's full of strange nasty sounds that I will never be able to use in a song anyway. It does however have a huge control panel with many more setting than any of the Reason synths ( all I know to compare it to ).

anyone can use VA synths, but using FM synths is a skill. if i have understood right the oscillators sort of modify each other and that makes pretty unique sound. for example "solid bass" sound which lot's of trance producers used in 98-00 and was very popular in techno when dx7 came out, that's pretty unique and can be done with FM synth only..
FM-synthesis reacts totally different to filters than normal VA synths.. i think it takes a lot of work to get good sounds out of FMs but then again that will probably make you feel even more good..
i think most of DX presets, that even FM7 has sound pretty shitty, but there are some good ones, and they all are uneffected, so add some effects and they start to sound good. what i love in FM7 is the very free modifying of the oscillator amp envelope, you can great some pretty wicked gated sounds with that.

I have like 100 presets for FM7. Simply tweak them a litte and you'll be done... Want them?

no, i don't want presets, i want to learn the fm synthesis myself.. it's interesting, i have presets aswell..
just created my first fm sound from stratch ever 
a nice sub sort of bass sound made with two sines only

Take a look at the series "Synth Secrets" by Gordon Reid (google).
The free software SynthEdit is interesting too.

FM Synths are a real mystery. I often use very simple DX10 by mda, but I'm starting to run out of ideas, since it's tweaking possibilies are very narrow. Anyone uses FM Heaven? It always looked very complex to me. So complex that I only used presets  . Yeah, I agree, using Frequency Modulation is real art.

DX10 is very simple, and i think the sound is horrible.. FM Heaven is better though, but i think FM7 is the best. I Always knew how to tweak sounds with FM7, but i had no idea what i was doing, but now thanks to that guide aulin posted, i start to understand it more, still not sure why somethings to something 
FM sounds are something you can only do with FMsynth, make a song with FM sounds only and i guarantee no-one will say "this sounds reason"
