I need to know how one goes about recording vocals into the computer.
This is what I have to work with:
-Adobe Audition
-soundcard with one stereo in and one stereo out
-mixer with preamp
-microphone
-studio monitors
This is what I want to do:
-use Adobe Audition
-have a track with music for playback
-record just my vocals on another track
-have some FX like compressor, EQ, reverb on my vocals just so they don't sound dry when I'm recording them (but not necessarily have them printed onto the track)
I think the last one involves a bus or something? Sorry about my ignorance on music production lingo. |

ok i don't know the Adobe Audition program, but i'm guessing it's something close to soundforge wavelab etc. so if the program has a record button it's ok for recording.
there are two ways to do this proper way.
most of the sequencers have a recording possibility and with a good soundcard you can put the song on and record the vocals so that they instantly fit the track. also you can do the effecting there, most sequencer have really good plugins, like logic audio for example. what sequencer do you use?
also there is another way..
and that is that you play the song to your headphones and record the vocals while listening the track. this is the most common way, but not the easiest, the first one is the easiest. to do this you will use that adobe program, or soundforge or any similar.
what comes to the connections this depends on your setup. i'm not sure of this but..
from your soundcard there goes audio out to either your stereo equipment, monitors or mixer. plug it to something were you can plug headphones. (it's possible to plug headphones straight to soundcard too, depending on soundcard, but most cards cut low frequences and some volume, i don't think those are that essential when recording vocals though)
then you have to plug your preamp or mixer to soundcard audio in, and then you plug your microphone to your mixer or preamp and you are ready to record..
(it is possible that you have to enable recording in your cpu though. which means (in windows) that you open "volume control" (speaker icon in downright corner, also can be found in startup menu) and there click "preferences" and choose "recording" and there are some possibilities to choose from)
edit:
now that i think of it, actually both of the ways are the same
just that in the first one its' easier to pick what sounds you want to play while recording, or just metronome.
but both ways need the music to come from your headphones...

Magicdust: Oh my god. That sounds incredibly simple and easy. I can't believe I was trying to do this the hard way. Like, trying to figure out how to rig my mixer and if there's a setting in Adobe Audition that I have to use, blahblah. The soundcard that I wanted to use to record vocals doesn't have a headphone jack so that also made me think that I had to do something extra. But all I have to do is use my other soundcard with the headphone jack as the audio output.
Thanks a lot for your help. For real. I guess I could just visit the Adobe Audition site for tutorials on how to use FX sends. Yeah, it's the same thing as Cool Edit Pro 2. |

your welcome, hope it helps. it's really not a common way to attach headphones to soundcards, but some soundcards (some SBlasters and some internal) have that possibility and the sound is enough good for recording (it cuts some low end though)
also you don't have to use your another soundcard. everything can be connected to everything, it's just electricity.. so if your soundcard has RCA output forexample, plug it to your mixer and you can plug your headphones there, or plug it to stereo or any music player and plug the headphones there... simple

Magicdust: well, I originally wanted to plug my RCA out to my mixer, but I'm going to have to play around with my mixer settings because I need to use my mixer as a mic preamp as well... I could also plug output to a second mixer or whatever, like you said.
I don't think Adobe Audition has VSTi capabilities. I don't think it can record MIDI either! Well, onto FL Studio, I guess.
Also, how do I get email notifications whenever a topic gets new comments? |

ok i'm not that good with mixers, but i would except a good mixer to have a feature so that you could...
plug the audio out from your soundcard to one mixer channel, and make that channel to your headphones, and then use another channel where you place a microphone and make the sound go to your audio in in your soundcard.
if this ain't possible, then mixers are pretty useless..
