as long as a tracker has a good soundengine, good instruments, and possibility to add effects to any instrument i don't really see why they wouldn't be used, after all that's a totally different way to do totally same things as with midi.

i'm still wondering how VSTi samplers like "battery" for example is used in trackers? and how about MIDI?

It-Alien often uses Kontakt in Renoise, so it's possible and can give good results.

BTW, I started with FruityLoops and though I always liked this program I found trackers better for me. Also I discovered that in Renoise I can do everything which is possible with apps such as Fruity, but I can make it more comfortable. And Renoise is very cheap considering all those 'pro' applications.

I'm not waiting for IT3 anymore. I found RENOISE!!!
Have You ever been...? :dj:

im afraid there will be no trackers left in a couple of years. These midi-sequencers and VSTis are too easy to get and are too easy to use.

Do you really think midi sequencers are easier to get than trackers? i don't think so. Midi sequencers are bigger and more expensive. Make a google search, find "Modplug Tracker", download 600Kb and you're set. It's easier to get decent sound with a tracker, because you use the samples directly. With MIDI sequencers you have to resourse to soundfonts (in which case you need a sf2 compatible card) or software samplers. You can use VSTi's too, but how many years will a beginner spend till he finds out what those things are and even that they exist. There's nothing better than a tracker for a beginner. Most sequencers are scary the first time a beginner opens them (ok, trackers too, but they you can achieve acceptable results earlier).

strangely enough i started out on cakewalk and i did alright :P i think lol

That's because you're smarter than us, poor mortals

Now, seriously. I started with PowerTracks Pro, years ago. I didn't know anything about theory but I knew how to read sheetmusic and knew the notes in the piano, etc. I made some crappy tunes (three or four). Then I discovered the piano roll, and found it nicer. I stopped and dropped it until I found FT2, years later. That's what I mean. Of course, I didn't know the possibilities of MIDI and had no chance to know because the Internet was just beginning to be used by normal people. So, actually, I must admit that I'm comparing different times. I could learn to track in part because of the Internet, too, so, maybe I was exaggerating in my post. Still, I think that the advantage of seeing all tracks at the same time while editing is nice. There will always be people who prefer the tracking style. And everything I said about having to learn a lot before doing something decent with MIDI is still true.
