Often I see this happen, and it really bugs me. But there are always people who will see things differently so I would just like to hear both sides.

A new track appears at CTG... and the first person rates it very high, say a 9.
The second person comes along, and thinks 9 is too much, the song is really a 7.... so instead of rating it a 7... they rate it a 5 ( making the average rating a 7 ). Then usually they try to argue that the 9 was WAY too high, the song doesnt deserve it, blah blah blah.

In my opinion this is extrememtly unfair. By under-rating the track they are attempting to undermine the first review. The other reviewer may have felt the song really deserved a 9, gave it alot of thought. They may have said lots of nice things and backed it up. Under-rating is unfair to the other reviewer(s).

Secondly it serves no purpose to state in YOUR review that SOMEBODY ELSE's rating is too high. This isn't reviewing a song anymore, its reviewing a reviewer... and this is not fair to the artist. Nobody wants a review full of " obScene you're crazy for rating this track so high, it's not that good at all... just listen to this other song its much much better. " Is that helpful reviewing?

IMO, when you rate a song... you should not even consider the other ratings. Rate the song on YOUR personal scale. You are not responsible for making sure that CTG ratings are all coherent... you are in charge of YOUR opinion. NOBODY should try to manipulate the average rating... because it's for everybody.

Well you know my opinion.

example? i review tracks as they sound - i never even look at the average rating of a track - i don't care about that.

i review and rate tracks based on the quality of tracks on ctg (and elsewhere) that i think are good/bad and rate accordingly. i dont rate inline with most other peoples ratings on here because so many of them are just f*cked up.

if only everyone could do the same thing, then these over-ratings wouldnt happen in the first place eh! :)

Ah I dont want to give examples.. not trying to make anybody mad. I just want to express my opinion and hear the opinions of others. If you know a good example, you post it.

never taken enough notice to see if people actually down mark a track to reduce its average rating.

ive seen plenty of shit scoring used (ie: psyxels review of my track elysium - 6).

i even think that people avoid reviewing certain peoples music, or review it unfairly so as to try and fix the ratings a little.

not saying mine, but there are definately some people who seem to avoid reviewing certain peoples work.

Oi. Come on. I tried to give my oppinion (of course I was censored many times... :D )
The only thing i ve gotta say is that, when i came to CTG, my 1st impression (after downloading 5 tunes more less) was that many tracks were overrated so i wrote my oppinion. Now i listen to a track, if i like it i write a review. If i dont, i wont (like Storm tunes... waste of time to write my review to one of his tunes coz he knows my oppinion... no offence Storm.)
Some talked about the average rating. Well i havent been here for a long time but i dont think people ll review a song just to change the average rating (besides there r song with so many reviews that it s impossible to make a difference).
I dont read others ratings and that s why sometimes people r surprised by my reviews.
For me the only thing that matters is what people write in the review. The rating it s just a number and it wont make a difference. At least for me.

Oh, don't misunderstand. Psyxel... Im not trying to criticize you. I never even thought of you when I opened this topic.

Your reviewing already had its topic! ;)

congrats obScene for openin a topic with alittle guts :)

:bravo: :bravo:

yea i agree people should keep their reviewing bias to themselves when reviewing, tho (im not arguing for the opposite here) its sometimes interesting to see how people do rate and review, tis what makes this place a community aswell as a forum :P

Reviews should strictly be how YOU feel about the track and what YOU think it deserves. Not what someone else thinks, and what someone else thinks shouldn't influence ur review in any way.

Of course...

There's not a person on this board who's going to come on here and say: "My opinion is more important than anyone else's around here, so I feel that I should rate towards what I feel an appropriate average score should be."

So, I think I can say with only a small bit of humor: "Everyone here agrees with you (about everyone else.)"
