i would say 130-150, the more progressive it is the slower it is. and this aren't rules, they just happen to be speeds that work the best, it's not like about 140bpm in trance is a rule, it just sounds the best, you can try it by making a trance song 170bpm, it sounds stupid and amateurish..
also when mixing to sets it's good that most of the songs use about the same tempo so they don't sound like shit when you have to use the pitch a lot..

rock trance? nah that's called psytrance/goa"
i think you missed his "joke"
i actually think rock has way more rules than trance, it depends a lot, but trance has a lot of free rule stuff as in all rock songs have "guitar, bass, acoustic drums, a part, b part, c part/bridge, chorus, vocals"
i don't think trance has that much of a rules.. even a 4/4 beat isn't a nessasery way to make it, there are breakbeat trance (like my latest song) and it works good that way too in some cases, 4/4 makes it a bit pumping, that's why it's used so much, not a rule though.. same as telling a rock musician that maybe you should play your guitar riffs with a sitar, i don't think he would.
trance has clichees though, but that's way different from rules...
- sawlead
- snare roll
- breaks
- dj friendly intro outro
sometimes using some of those clichees can make the tune a lot more enjoyable

Faithless - Insomnia is 128bpm ^^
I heard some 120bpm trance, that's very relaxing stuff.
But... usually it's 138 - 142...

First, all trance is 4 beats. Most of it is 4/4 (I've heard swing time trance but that's still 4/4 and some 12/8 which is essentially the same thing with constant triplets.) It's not a flaw, it's just dance music.
Rock doesn't always have any of those elements listed. Which doesn't make it superior, just a bit more freeform. Ben Folds Five = no guitar, White Stripes = no bass, Tool = electronic drums (an electronic drumkit at least), multiple rock bands have no singer, prog-rock destroyed the verse/chorus/bridge stuff...
Those are just some "off the top of my head" examples, I'm sure if I looked at my CDs I'd find more pretty easily. |

well same goes for trance, every "rule" you name i'm sure someone is able to find a song without it. also if by 4 hits you mean bassdrum going monotonicly in 1, 2, 3 and 4 then you are wrong, since there is breakbeat trance aswell, for instance "orkidea - innerpeace"
or "symmetry c - brainchild (lange remix)", sure you could call it breakbeat too, but you can also call all trance club music, electronic music, dance music etc etc..
if you have a trance song and you just change the 1, 2, 3, 4 beat to
|b|-|b|-| |s|b|-|b| |-|-|b|-| |s|-|-|-|
- empty
b bassdrum
s snare/clap etc
it doesn't change the song from trance to something else, or if it would then the only rule for trance would be 4/4 beat and that would make all other 4/4 beat music like progressive, techno, house, hardhouse etc trance aswell

I never said that the bassdrum hits on every beat itself. That's not what makes something 4/4. 4/4 means that there are 4 quarter notes per measure; that you can divide the rhythm into 4 beats before things repeat. Your counterexamples are counterexamples to an argument that I never made. |
