I agree song is not the right word, although when something is very popular, it becomes correct in a natural way. That's how languages evolve.
DDspeed: actually most people use different words, so as to avoid repetitions. I use: track, song, piece, number, work (if you know it's a musical work from the context)
no more ideas ATM

Slovenian translation of "Song" is same as poem so there must be singing included otherwise it isnt a song.
But in english the word is a bit more general so i dont see no problem if people use song as a peace of music which doesnt neccessarly include vocals.

I agree with Louigi. That's why I use the words "track" and "piece of music". Song is wrong. A song is a piece of music that is sung, and in which the main melody is the one sung by the voice.

i think you people are mixing your own language a bit too much to this, if you translate a song straight to finnish it doesn't mean it has to have vocals, we do have a word for that too, but some languages song means something that has vocals, in english it doesn't though, so you guys are wrong, and personally everyone can say what they want..
if song isn't something you wanna use, then use
track, and track doesn't mean just tracked song, or a cd track. more than one is "my traxx are mostly psychohouse"
or
piece, as in "what's your latest piece?"
baby, as in "check out my latest baby"
production
tune
choon comes from tune, and can only be used from massive trance traxx

Strangely enough for me, in the tracking world ppl are used to call their compositions 'songs'. I wonder why? Song is more a musical piece with vocals. In most tracked 'songs' there are no vocals. |
RIGHT ! ''song'' is a track with a human singing away, that's true!!!
(but if ctg has default 4 our tracks to call them ''songs'' it's not that bad, ok we can uderstand besides, it's not how we name this it's all about music

Here is another take on it:
Song - 1 Sylable
Track - Also 1 Sylable
Composition - 4 sylables
Therefore, Song and Track are quicker, easier and more memorable than composition. Doesn't stop me using it though. :o)
Oh arse. Crunch time. |
