I often get my ideas in the morning, when I first wake up. I can lie in bed with a melody in my head, and start figuring out how to compose it for a song. But then the fatal thing may accure; I start thinking of other useless stuff, and I loose my idea. Sometimes just getting out of bed is enough to loose it. How great wouldn't it be if music could be made directly from the head, where musical hardware/software is the head/mind? wohoo
Besides mornings, my creativity rises at night, so thats also a highlight for my ideas. Wait.. im totally off topic now... uhm.. when I run out of ideas, I go and do something else, and wait for the ideas to come to me.

Yeah, I'd like that: to plug my brains somewhere and transfer the music. I have great ideas sometimes, and they're really difficult to put in practice.

I know the feeling. I have 'sung' my melodies for liek 1.30 hours, just to memorize it. As far as I know, when you are behind the computer and you get an amazing idea then it's the best thing that can happen to you..

Sometimes when I walk to the bus stop which takes a good fifteen minutes, I find it useful to sing in your head something that you've written previously, but instead of doing it the way you've written, go off on a tangent. This kind of free-associative thinking can lead to some very spectacular results, and you wishing that you had a brain-to-computer scoring program. I've only really remembered one idea that I managed to track when I got home, and that was waaaay back in 1999 or something, in my tracking days.
PPH: I think my problems are partially due to my mindset and the way I write, being not in joined sentences but unconnected paragraphs. I finish one section, then I have to figure out a bridge to take it onto another section which might be completely different, sometimes losing the smooth connection. That said, when on a roll, it can work out quite well.
Anyway I should quit whining. I got uni for 3 more days (that and two deadlines) but after that, I can finish up the post-production on my track. )))

I have a similar way of working. I have an idea and I track this. This is a block of my song. After this, I have to go on with another block. And that's the difficult part. The next block must match the previous one. Usually I do ok, by using variations on themes etc. Before, when I was starting, I would just make separate blocks with different ideas and then try to connect them. I don't do that anymore. It doesn't work. It's a pain to try to make a bridge that unite two independent blocks. Besides, at the end, the piece doesn't flow and is not coherent. Each part of the piece must have something that is a consequence of what has come before, or at least totally match. So, nowadays, if I have another idea, and I know it won't fit, I erase it, or save it for another song (provided that it is independent enough). Or I saved until for some reason, it fits ok somewhere. Or I change te idea itself until it fits. But I think our problems are similar and are derived from the kind of music we make.

I know E-X-A-C-T-L-Y what you mean. I too go to the bus stop which takes some good 15 minutes and during that time I, without planning it, get such great ideas. But once having arrived home, I loose most of them, and the ones I do remember, I find hard o emplement while just staring at the screen. There is something about walking, being free, or maybe the sun outside or fresh air or something which stimulates us without even wanting it in the first place.

I am a big man, with large biceps.
But my biceps have no heart, so how can I be expected to lift heavy things?
Sigh, my life is so hard

I like to chill out for a few days if it gets too much and totally forget about producing... Good remedies I think is get on battlefield and kick some ass or just play some games if I am at home and try to forget... Then when I come back to the tunes, it seems so much simpler & easier! |

If I ever run out of ideas, I listen to a lot of commercial tunes, always helps me gain inspiration again
