I'm more into atomsphere and soundscapes. Neither melody or sound quality is important if you can create a rich atmosphere that captures a particular mood at the particular time.

I might be one of the few who actually says "sound comes first" :) imo it does.

The sound itself has a creative aspect - the reason for a tune to have a good sound, is not only to make the mix more professional. The sound (selection of instruments, effects) defines at least like 50% of the songs atmosphere.

Perhaps wording the question differently might make it more sensical?
I read that as "Atmosphere" or "Melody"

My view on that is pretty short and sweet - For me, melody keeps the listener listening, Atmosphere makes it all the more believable.
I also find that works backwards too - I can't write music for a shit melody, but at the same time, I can't work on a good melody if the atmosphere isn't right.

Or something.

The melody and synth are the elements that stand out for me.
