you totally missed my point, the point was that those choices are the only electronic music available in that poll. and imo trying to do "acoustic instrument" music with computer is the silliest thing to do,

But you can make strings, guitars, woodwinds, various ethnic instruments, percussions, etc etc. You have a vision, compose some stuff using samples. To use real instruments and check how your ideas will sound in reality, you'd need hell a lot of musician to work for you. No can do, especially when you're poor, amateur student.
I often imitate live instruments in my music, although I always underline this is electronic music and those intruments are not real, so that nobody tells me "HAHAHAHA THIS IS NOT A REAL GUITAR F__ YOU". Is it silly? For some yes, for others not. I have fun with it and some people like it. So it does make some sense. The fact there are real sampled sounds makes it possible for me not to limit myself to using synths. Why not use the possibility when it's fun.
and is for people who don't know actually how to play anything.
|
Of course. I for example can't play anything and I'm making elemental steps in keyboards. I'm not ashamed that I can't, I simply didn't learn that since I was 10. I admit it loudly I can't play any musical instrument well enough to record it and create a song. I regret.. But at the same time I use any possibilities to work with music I like. Nobody is forced to listen and like... but don't call me silly please. I have fun with it.
However it's not only for such people. Imagine you are a guitarist and want a sound of french horn in your stuff... damn are you going to buy one and learn to play?
if you wanna do rock, buy a freaking guitar for instance.
|
And get a group of relatively responsible and skilled people to work with, who will be willing to play your stuff. And find a place to practice and record stuff together. And find the money somehow too.
And if you want to do orchestral stuff... Damn you should have chosen another school first of all. now you're screwed.
Bottom line: let's not mix amateur musicmaking for fun and serious career plans.

I love trance because it's simple. The beauty of trance is it's simplisity. I like that.

My view on this, yes, that there are instruments, which are not really nice to 'imitate', and there are, which have common 'electronic sound'. For example, you just cannot imitate guitar, violin, flute, etc etc (especially if they play solo), cause they just sound mechanic and bad (unless you have very good samples and enough time to play with the details).
Some instruments, like strings, brass, piano, some percussion, etc etc has the electronic version: so noone really think that you wanted to imitate the orchestra, but you used similar waveforms.
That is the tiny little difference I believe it is bad to imitate the live instruments purely with synths.

It's funny that people can listen to a slightly filtered saw wave and think of it as very exciting and good-sounding. Then, if they hear a more complicated wave, say, something that resembles a violin timbre, then it suddenly sounds bad. Not because it really does sound bad, but because "it doesen't sound like a real violin playing". People tend to think of sounds in music as something made by instruments instead of simply, er, sound. And that's when they start comparing "fake instruments" to "real instruments" (or whatever terms they use), and the listening experience gets a little messed up for them. Now it might sound like I am fond of sampled violins, which I am not (it was just an example). But, as the old saying goes, "a sampled violin can't behave like a real violin, and a real violin can't behave like a sampled violin". |

Actually, can I change my vote to RnB?
I had the most irritating experience today (actually it was as bad as last wednesday) where here I was trying to do a few hours of revision, when the little bastard next door starts okaying rnb so loud you can probably hear it down the road. One of the main things that is really irritating is that bass, with it's long wavelength can penetrate quite a lot of brick, and so here I was trying to calculate shear flows in fuselage structures whilst this little shit was going deaf playing his shitty r and bloody b. Bloody prick.
Erm, pardon me.
</end rant>

"The 'soul' of the machines has always been a part of our music. Trance always belongs to repetition, and everybody is looking for trance in life... in sex, in the emotional, in pleasure, in anything... so, the machines produce an absolutely perfect trance."
