I think good samples are important to allow listeners to concentrate on what is really important: The composition.

Well, maybe if the composition suck, sound quality can't be so important... But is a good point of the track...

Im not totaly sure what you mean by "good samples". Good quality or one which fits in the song well. I think if we talk about sound quality mostly all of the artists here use high quality samples and quite some make their own samples so i think quality of the sound is a matther of some 10% of the songs maybe, those which still use some 8bit samples.
So saving a bad song with good quality samples nowdays dont work since all the other (allready good) songs have good samples aswell.

Well, first lets reverse the question: yes, bad samples and bad techniques can totally turn a piece bad, even if it is a nice melody and / or composition.

Back to the question: surely, if you increase the quality of the samples (and more, the technique, how you use them), it increases the quality of the song.

I still say, that a relatively 'light' composition can turn out to be pretty nice, if you use instruments in a unique way.

Doriath: I think a 'light' composition can be nice even when made without special uniqueness, I mean easy and simple stuff doesn't have to be bad. In this case, I'd say there's nothing to 'save', as the song itself is not bad. :) But great instrument performance, or interesting sound can make up for 'too much' simplicity, with that I'd agree.

The problem arises when the composition is obviously awkward. Very good sound quality makes such tunes sound better than equally bad compositions, but I'm not sure if that's what would save them, especially keeping in mind what Ace said.

nah, quality is relative. I never heard a bad composer with awesome samples.
and onto that --> a dark song should have dark (usually classified as bad) quality. I might be me, but I like that.
You' re always as good as your last song.

If a piece of music is bad, it doesn't matter how good the sound quality is. The piece is bad and nothing can save it. I also think good samples are important to let the artist concentrate in the composition, which is the most important thing. I don't think bad sound quality can make a good piece bad. It can make it less enjoyable, but not bad from a musical point of view, although, of course, there is a big difference between a piece with good samples and a piece with bad samples. I mean: the composition is one thing, and the performance is another. There are good pieces with bad sound quality and bad pieces with good sound quality. Of course, when we're talking about electronic genres such as techno and trance, samples are more important, because the action of composing is closely related to sound shaping. I don't usually make this kind of music (though I'm starting to use electronic sounds) but I've always admired this aspect of it.

I slightly disagree, cause finally music is for our ears: if the sound is bad, the composition can be remarkable, I still cannot enjoy it. One weird example is a bad quality Santana tape... if I cannot enjoy every piece of the guitar sound, I'd better not listen to it.

Well, if you have a good composition, you can do lots of performances until you get the best one. If the original mix is bad, you can say "hey dude, your composition is great, i would like to record it with my group of professional musicians". It's way better that to say "hey, you have great samples, if you change everything in the composition, you can make a great tune out of them."

At least from my point of view :)
