Suprprisingly, I can't seem to find any my post in this topic that would actually answer the question, so here it is:
I started off with Magix Music Maker. Then found FL 3.01, then Buzz, FT2, IT and finally Renoise, which I've been using for about 3 years now.

I started out with the hex editor. I chosed the format 44khz 16-bit wav, cause it wasn't too complicated. Since each byte is represented by two hex numbers, I had to enter 352800 such numbers to get 1 second of audio. First I thought it was amazing, since I never had any limits, like synths and samples has. I mean, if wanted the sound of a 200 oscillator synth lead, I could just do a quick calculation in my head and start writing the hex code.
In the end though, I got bored of the time consuming process (although I'm a fast typer), and moved on to Renoise.

An interesting fact - from Scream Tracker I moved on to Magix. And only then unwillingly I started with FT2, since in Magix you couldn't actually 'compose' music. But Magix had beautiful sounds.

Impulse tracker here. I started with it in order to make songs for my computer games, they were horrible and I wasn't serious with music making, so I quit for a about 8 years. When I got back, IT couldn't run on XP so I found modplug, and there I produced my first non-complete-junk.

I started out trying alot of programs, to silence the music in my head... to keep those voices from...err... nevermind, back to my story:
I first off tried soundrecorder in windows, but that screwed up, then I tried some MIDI
program, but didn't want to be a maestro, so I quit that, then I moved on to trying
an old BASIC program in Dos, didn't work that either. (something that worked as a
virtual keyboard, but didn't have the record abilities)
Then, I just took a break..... and one day, a bud of mine comes over and goes
"hey dude, check this program out!" and with him he had...... guess what? FT2?.. no!
He had an old module player program with him, called Cubic Player (102 hits) and he had a bunch of mods with him, and we played through some of these songs, amazed at the soundquality VS size, and then he left and I checked on and on until I found one track that got me hooked harder than crack!
Mental Floss - Bigtime II -
After I had heard this xm file (which is now only available through mp3's on the artists site, or by mailing me) I throught to myself "why does this format sound SO much better than that other .mod format for?" So I tried to find what program would make this format, but since I didn't have the internet I couldn't do much.
Then one day, the earlier mentioned friend returns and with him, he's got FT2!
end of story ! (or rather, I couldn't be arsed to tell you lot the rest of the boring details)
Anyways, in the future, I assume that I'll quit making insane music in
FT2, quit the scene and join a death country/metal band !

If you were smart, you would type out the song you want to make in Notepad first, then save it as a .wav file.
