Is there any technical difference between what we call studio-monitors and a pair of good hifi-speakers? I mean; can i just buy a pair of good 6"-8" speakers and call them monitors? or is is something special with studio-monitors?

Studiomonitors have a peak protection wich is highly recommend. Also frequenvy response is usually flat enough in all monitors. When you buy hifi speakers for monitor purposes you have to look carefully that ;)

Does that also count for headphone monitors?

Monitors are designed to give you an honest sound as possible...

Normal speakers 'colour' the sound... which means they use all kinds of tricks to make it sounds cooler than it actually is..

with monitors you should hear the sound as it is, no colouring...

as for the limiters, my speakers have limiters, so i can't break um when i throw the volume up :) not all have limiters though as far as i know.

and for the headphones, as far as i know they don't have limiters... my monitor headset can take huge volumes though :)
headphones are designed for the same thing, but i noticed the won't match the quality of monitor speakers... a headset just most of the time gives you a bad reference for reverbs and delays mostly, among some volume issues.

monitor speakers rule :)

Like MB said - monitors are designed to let you know how the sound REALLY sounds, while normal speakers are designed to sound good.

The cheapest I've ever seen costed about 500 EUR (for a pair), while the most expensive can cost over 5000 UER (for a SINGLE one, so you have to buy two). Best way to buy them is to go to a music shop :P .

active means that they have built-in amplifier. So if you want to buy passive ones, you have to get yourself also a separate amplifier.
