That's something I've never knew about...
BTW, Denis is definately NOT a Polish name. When I was born it was possible to name peopleeven if the name you've chosen was foreign. Now it's illegal.

Yep. But illegal doesn't have to mean that you'll go to jail for it. There would be just problems with registering the name.
It still is possible though. If you know certain people .

How very strange. If this were the case in the US there would be riots in the streets.

I think it's good thing, at least here.
For Polish people foreign names sound really bad... Luckily "Denis" is quite neutral, but it often reminds people of the word "penis" .
Generally many people had really stupid ideas on how to name children, that's why certain kinds of names are now forbidden.

It's a damn good thing... US is much different in this matter, in Poland names like Angelica sound totally out of place. It's like the parents wanted to be cool and give a foreign name to their child.
However, it'd be much more natural in a family of immigrants, but we don't have as many of them as you.
... Have I just said that?? |

I bet nobody would make any problems if a family of another nationality would want to name a kid in the name representing the nationality that they declared. I don't know the law that good though...

But I can't understand why you aren't pissed off at the government for telling YOU that you can't name YOUR OWN KID whatever you want?
You guys hate Microsoft because of much smaller things... the government is taking away YOUR rights!!!

Such a 'right' can get really pissing off after the kid grows up. For you maybe it's not logical, but belive me. Being name for example "Jenna" or in any other foreign way is a total shame especially during school and possibly in the further state of life. I really wouldn't like to be named "James" for example. It's stupid, crappy and totally out of place.
A kid is not only your toy. It's NOT good to allow parents to choose any names. As I said, when it was possible people had really stupid ideas sometimes. The it's the child that get's punished for the choice of parents.
Also the names are a part of our national culture, so it's good to preserve it. Just like language or anything else.
You Americans become really sick about your rights and some day your country will be lost in total anarchy.
You guys hate Microsoft because of much smaller things... the government is taking away YOUR rights!!!

I have my right to call my kid in any Polish name. I think there are hundreds of them so it's definately enough.
As I said - I don't think it would be a problem to name my child in another language if I for example was another nationality.
I still think that naming kids only in Polish is not as bad as spending 2'000'000 PLN on MS Office liscences by the government (which happened recently) in a country that gets more and more debts...
