Rules and Guidelines:
Essentially I'd like your track or album to be within the genres of progressive house, tech-house, progressive trance, new age, downtempo, ambient or related. This is because I appreciate these genres most and am most familiar with them and thus able to get to get the right results quickly.
Currently I'm able to render from within the following software applications, but in most cases it isn't be a problem for me to get a hold of additional software I may require to produce the master:
* MODPlug Tracker
* Reason
* Renoise
* Sk@le Tracker
And while I'll primarily be using the Waves LinMB, LinEQ, IR1 and L3 MultiMaximizer mastering processors, applying any plug-ins from the following will mean I can use your settings as a starting point for deriving the final master settings:
* Ultrafunk Sonitus-fx R3
* SpinAudio RoomVerb M2 2.0
* Waves Diamond Bundle v5.0
* Waves IR1
* Waves L3 MultiMaximizer
Do not include any other compressors, EQ or reverb plug-ins and be sure to set all track volumes or instrument levels to the default or as loud as possible without causing clipping distortion (it's OK if all the mixing levels aren't right anymore at this stage). This way, I should just be able to render each individual track with the click of a few buttons without having to worry about getting the best signal to noise ratio or having the audio tracks be affected by some low-quality processors that could quite well not be set up properly. Also, set any mixing desk EQ knobs to 0 or bypass them to disable any such low-quality shelf EQs etc.
I can understand that you may want to use certain delay- or other colouration plug-ins, but keep in mind that I would like to compress the signal before any such processing is done, in which case I highly recommend you use Waves SuperTap, Enigma or the IR1 so that I can simply copy your settings across after having performed the neccessary compression and EQ.
Lastly, your track must have less than 20 unique audio tracks. That includes the breakdown of drum sounds, as I'll process the kick, snare and hats etc. separetely. The reason for this is because my computer is currently unable to cope with anything more.
So, if you could follow all these rules before applying then I don't see why I shouldn't be able to produce a master within a few days. |
Ok so I've started this topic on MODPlug Central a while ago already, but since I came to a turning point in my life recently I've decided to now focus 100% of my spare time on mastering only. I won't really produce any of my own music anymore, not that I really did all that much anyway.
So, as I'd like to become a professional mastering engineer one day, I want to continue to master as much music as possible to gain as much experience as I possibly can. Then I might eventually be able to use these as a portfolio kind of thing when applying for really big (commercial) projects.
What I said on MODPlug Central, is that if any of you have any music that you'd like to get mastered, either drop a reply here or give me a PM. I'm not too sure how big the response for this will be here, but as I've just started a project mastering an album for BotB I won't be able to start on it for another few weeks or so. But if I could just get an idea as to how popular this service might be then that'd be good.
I won't charge you for it, as I understand you probably don't have much money anyway. In the future though, this might change, but I'm only just starting out of course. The only thing I ask is that I get some credit for the work, in hope of getting both you a record deal and my foot in the door of a professional mastering studio. So please, only serious releases.
And the other thing I ask is that you either send me through a source file of your work provided I have or can get the software and/or plug-ins for it, or that you send me through the appropriate wave files for each individual audio track. I'd prefer a quality of 96 kHz 32 bit float, but I know that's gonna be extremely big to transfer so we might have to make some sacrifces there (anything but MP3 or any other lossy compressed audio format though).
So yeah, if anyone is interested, let me know so I can get an idea as to how often I'd be able to do this. I do also work as a sound engineer, but I think I can squeeze in a bit of this in my day as well.
I currently have about three years mastering experience and use only high quality processors with linear phase crossovers and all those other fancy things, plus I have a high-quality setup for referencing too. But if you'd like to wait for some samples, you'll have to check out BotB's album when it's released.

I would love to hear the example with "before" and "after" mastering. To see the difference.

Well...Renoise, MODPlug Tracker, Sk@le Tracker, Buzz...actually, it's mostly trackers that I have but I'm sure I could get Reason too if I had to. Of course freeware programs would be morally right to use, but since I'll be "trying before buying" I don't see it as a bad thing at all.
Is the track already online so I can get a preview of it?

Well i dont think what you did is mastering in real meaning of the word. You actualy changed the song by adding delays and reverb. I dont think this should be done. Mastering as i understand it, should be pure post production based only on final wav export. So if you would master my song i would not want you to add any kind of effect or to change panning and so on. I would expect pure equalizing, compressing, normalizing and other "*ing" things
Offcourse your version sounds much much better but still i think you changed it too much since if artist would want delays and reverb he could add those in his own. What you did is more like production help.
