imo acoustic does not represent a genre. Acoustic means there are no rythmic instruments involved (or is that unplugged?)

anyway, with a guitar you can play acoustic (or unplugged) for instance, but it's not a style, as you can play blues acousticly just as any other style. It's just a term to express the way a track is being performed.

You're right, acoustic is not a genre, but it has absolutely nothing to do with rythm. It means that acoustic instruments are used, i.e. an acoustic guitar is used instead of an electric one. There might be amplifiers involved for the microphone and the guitar, but in any case, effects such as distortion are not used.
From Darkness To Light, my newest track.

Acoustic is most certainly a genre as it is included in Winamp's ID3 tag genre list as well. The way I always saw it is that I classed any acoustic performance of a song of whatever genre as "Acoustic". This way I could keep all live performances of songs under that one genre that I could then easily located using the Media Library.

I wouldn't really say an acoustic genre is needed here though, as a lot of us certainly wouldn't perform a live version of our songs and upload them. Just use "Other", and follow it with "Acoustic" I'd say.

Oh, right! I had forgotten that Winamp ID3 tags were the world's primary authority on Musical Genres. Come on! You can do better than that!

Why include it when it isn't a genre though? I probably would've thought of it when trying to classify such live performances..

Well, acoustic is a type of instrumentation, but I won't consider it a genre... In the ID3 tags there are all kinds of possible recordings as not always mp3 file contains music...

"Acoustic" and "unplugged" are not so much as "genres" but they're more as "styles" of music.

Last time I checked, "style" and "genre" mean the same thing.
