Zone Alarm is not such a good firewall for me, It once locked me out of my internet for months, without letting me know it did that. |
Surely you must have noticed? |
Well, I knew the internet worked for 10 minutes then died. I didn't know ZA had something to do with it. It automatically locked my internet cuz the settings were insecure or whatever.

How about avast antivirus? It is okay for 1-5. I run it and it works fine so far. But no idea how effective it is. Anyone has any plus / minus?

I'm sure you can google for a review. I use it, and I'm pleased with it. |

Inserts ads in your email messages.

Is this optional? If it's not then screw it, but if it's optional.. then I'm going for it :-)
|
Yes it's optional. You just uncheck cetify incomming and outgoing messages, meanwhile it still checks the email's for virus's. I have had NO stability issues with AVG while running Windows XP with SP1/and SP2. I have also ran it on Windows 2000 without any problems. All anti virus programs WILL take up considerable CPU when scanning but when AVG runs its resident shield the CPU usage is minimal.
Here's what was wrong with the review:
# Some users have had freezes and other major stability issues on Windows 2000 and XP (I've never encountered this problem ever in the 1.5 years of using it)
# Slows down your computer considerably (Takes up CPU like EVERY virus scanner does when it's scanning)
# Inserts ads in your email messages. (You can disable it)
# You need to use DOS commands for some advanced operations. (You don't need the advanced options unless you're the biggest nerd on the planet)
# Log file displays limited info (Who the hell checks the log file?)
# You can't see anything in systray, so you don't know if it's running or not (WRONG!!!!! WRONG!!!!! WRONG!!!!! WRONG!!!!!)
# Terrible virus detection rate (I've had better detection with it than Norton)
# Doesn't update their virus definition files very often (You can have it update daily. Whoever wrote the review didn't know jack shit)
# Deletes infected files without warning. This is especially bad if the file didn't contain a virus after all (Quite simply wrong. Puts it into quarentine if it can't disinfect)
# Very low on scripts, backdoors and trojans (Always install the latest updates for Windows and have a firewall and you won't have a problem) |
