I noticed someone say that Reason is for the noobs and that FL is the program to use. Although FL is a great program Reason is not the software for a noob, FL is. FL is a software that can start a noob really quickly. Reason requires for you to know some sound design basics to use it effectively. If you do not understand or disllike vocabulary such as:
Routing
LFO
Channel
Aux
Send
Bus
CV
than Reason is definitely not for you. If you like simple interfaces without the 'gussing' of routing, splitting effect processing the left channel, delaying the right channel, setting control voltage to synthesizers, etc....Stick to FL.
reason is for the users that have used hardware or would really like to understand how hardware studios work (in effect).
I use Reason more than often and I always get people mentioning how it sucks. If you feel it's sucks it's more than likely because you tried to use it and didn't do well with it. I would actually encourage more people to use it...it really teaches you allot.
I would think you should not limit yourself to software or hardware for that matter. I use Reason through rewire with Cubase, FL, Project, Live, and Nuendo (basically SX).

You can make reason as basic or as complex as you like, the only problem I ever had with it before i rewired it with cubase was the fact that you couldn't use vst or direct x plugins but all was solved once I did...
reason's what you make of it and there are a hell of alot of professionals who use it alongside other software in their studios... |

god why the hell do you even care what other people think.. it doesn't have anything to do with anything.
when reason and fl just came out, i was using fl and back then everyone was dissing fl like hell, and praising reason. but i didn't care a shit, as i knew i can make the best songs with it, and i love working with it. now in some weird way people are dissing reason and praising fl, and suddently all the reason users are so upset. why do you care?
just do what you do best.
quite recently i have come across many people who have laughed their asses off when i say i use fl, but when i hear their songs made by "the only quality program there is" logic, i have to laugh my ass off. it certainly isn't the program that makes the songs
also people in proscene, recording artists and label managers have a weird attitude against fl and reason, like
guy: "hey with what are these made with?"
me: "fl"
guy: "hehe good one, no seriously with what?"
me: "i told you fl"
guy: "omg... i use logic for everything, everyone uses it, cosmicman uses it, orkidea uses it and so on and so on.."
me: "and?"
i mean there really seems to be people who think that some artists is as good as he is because of the program or equipment he uses... jesus.

ditto - although when i was in the studio it was cubase this cubase that! guh! CUBASE SUX!!! just because its `the` program to use doesn't mean its good/friendly/stable.
its down to the artist at the end of the day and personal taste, i love reason, i like fruity, i hate cubase.
i'd LIKE to see vst support in reason, using reason from cubase or fl just feels messy/uneccessary to me - the main thing i love about reason is its editing abilities, just sooo much more friendly and intuitive.
id like to be able to control the vsts FROM reason for that reason (not just because i want vsts in reason).

| I use Reason exclusively, although I have to admit I've been playing around a little with fl lately (mostly because of the vstis). |

Have tried Reason couple times, don't like it neither fl or any of these so called "software studios" feels like toys, but I do admit that you can create pretty sophisticated sound with it but it cannot do all, just IMO. I use Logic Audio Platinum and not planning to move into any other software. If necessary it would be Cubase or Pro Tools. It's no use to have Reason or FL if you own hardware synths. |

Anssi:
One of the reasons why everybody uses Logic in the production business is the fact that almost all the studios are running it. And why? well there was not this heavenly FL about 8 years ago and I clearly remember working with Logic 4.7 (running on macintosh) and because of that fact that Logic was the only reasonable solution at that time still affects to the production business. Cubase VST was already buried when Logic hit to the markets and everybody, all the big studios moved into Logic system.. now many of these studios are still updating the base version of the softaware, somewhat release 4?? It's much much easier to use logic and easily move around the arrangements from home studio to some bigger studio when using the same software as the big ones are using. Also I don't see any point of using these software studios if you own hardware synths or other instruments, and many of the artists do own that JP-8000 and Juno-106 and Virus C and and and.. How you record and arrange instruments in realtime with Reason? use the Reason sampler? the hell with that But hey it's only matter of what you need
You can compare this thing to the grahic editing business.. everybody uses Photoshop, and why??? because that's what they learn from the school Pro Tools has this same kind of success tho PT is still awesome. |
