I'm looking for a free high quality convertion tool able to make a multi midi-track file out of a xm-file.

What should I try?

You can try Modplug Tracker, I used it a couple of time to obtain a midi from a .xm or .it file...

2MIDI seems like a competent enough program to do a slick conversion. However, the program has a very uncomfortable workflow to say the least. Very time consuming.
