Hmmmz, you guys really EQ and compress everything in like every track you create?
Fortunately, my music is much more interesting than my posts. |

I think you have a wrong idea of compression, not every compression flats out your volume leaving nothing but notes with the same volume over It can also work to smooth out some things, and just compressing certain intrsuments (not velocity sensitive ) has prooven to be very effective!

Those sound like the same thing to me.
Nifflas, you're actually the first person I know who doesn't like compression. I mean, most people are like: "Wow, how did you make it sound like that?", but as you told me once, you prefer the super fast decay on percussive sounds. That's fair enough, but in most cases compression will do more good than harm. Maybe it's just some who don't like the effect it has on the sound, but I certainly find things more pleasing to listen to once they are a bit more solid and defined.
In most cases (at least when it comes to digitally-produced music), compression is about smoothing the dynamics out to create a more consistent sound that sits better in a mix, but it can also be used to do exactly that what you like to hear (the super fast decay) by adding 'punch' to sloppy recordings. Say if you recorded someone playing a bassdrum, but he/she didn't play it with much enthusiasm, and so the volumes and up pretty constant all the way through. By offsetting the attack time a little more than you regularly would (e.g. 10-20 ms instead of 1-5 ms), you can use the compressor to generate an initial peak, and hence the super fast decay.
Compression and EQ are really just tools you can use to finalise the sounds you use in your track if you're not fully satisfied with them to begin with, and of course to make them all work better with each other. Personally I think you should listen a bit more deeply into your music and consider how and when compression is actually a benefit, although that may be a bit hard if you just don't like the effect it has. As I said, you're the first person I know who doesn't like it.

Similarly, I think that EQ is a tool you can use to sculpt the sounds you use to exactly the way you want. Of course if you got everything right at the source, such as good microphone placement, or you've bought the most expensive sample CDs, you won't generally need EQ. But more often than not you will have to use EQ to make two or more instruments work properly together. Just adding random sounds together may work in artistic forms of music (or if you just like things to sound 'natural', like Nifflas ), but usually you would need to use EQ to sculpt the sounds properly so that they fit together (i.e. cutting away a bit from one sound in order to make another fit in that space)

About Reason 3 - how much is it gonna be? I'm wondering whether to buy it next time I save on the bus by walking to work on foot. The other option I could use is to have a bottle of mineral water. Which is better?
But seriously I guess this is gonna be a candy for Randor, Ace, obScene and all you other Reasonfreaks. I guess we're to expect new explosion of creativity soon
...but everything's crap anyway... |
