I started this topic partly out of boredom, and also as I was wondering what audio interfaces/sound cards the majority of people use. I'm guessing SoundBlaster Audigy and M-AUDIO mobile interfaces will probably be most popular.
Perhaps those only using onboard sound cards may also be able to get an insight into some options available, particularly if people post some comments on their experiences or what they use etc.
I did a quick hunt the other day for a decent consumer/semi-professional interface, and I think the best option to go for at the moment would be M-AUDIO's FireWire 410. Of course it depends what you're needing it for, but all around I think this looks very good, and not too pricey.
I've got expensive taste though , and I've had the MOTU 828mkII FireWire for nearly a year now. The quality of the DACs is the best I've ever heard, though I'm beginning to wonder how much better the quality is in more expensive units. Still though, this thing cost me a fortune and I'll be using it for at least a couple more years yet.

I'm using SB Live! at the moment. I want to move onto an Echo or M-Audio product in some months.

FireWire interfaces are best imo, and Echo only has PCI interfaces. I think M-Audio is probably among the best high-end consumer brands, though I've never actually used one before. There's plenty to choose from though: FireWire Audiophile for the least amount of features, then the FireWire 410, and higher up the FireWire 1814.
The FireWire 410 was my second choice actually before I bought the 828mkII, after I found out the speaker outputs aren't balanced, even though I don't use them at the moment anyway.

I won't buy a firewire interface because:
- I don't have money
- My mainboard doesn't have firewire interface

Fair enough. So go Audiophile USB then for half the price.

nah, I can spare max 800 PLN for a soundcard so the only option is Audiophile 24/96 PCI or Echo Mia MIDI. They're both the same class, price and both have ALSA support, so I'll probably choose randomly between them.
