I know this is gonna sound cheesy, but I just thought I'd share it here and maybe get some further comments/opinions about it.

What it all boils down to is that personally I find there's no better feeling when it comes to music production than listening to your final track/mix/master once you've completed it to the best of your ability, and for a moment there everything seems 'perfect'.

Now what makes this even better is when I step away from the studio and listen to it in a more 'human' location. Since I use headphones, currently this usually means stepping up to the window and just looking out at the scenery or sunset, whatever. It just amplifies the emotional feeling I get from the music, and I actually feel the music much more strongly and am able to make things sound even better.

It also reminds me of the fact how you can never quite listen to music in the right location (e.g. just when you need it most), or how exactly when the inspiration to compose something hits you, you don't have your equipment with you.

I think being able to stick my head out the window while listening to a transparently mastered (i.e. using linear phase technology  ) piece of music through my high quality setup is a big step in this direction for me, though it could be even more incredible if I had a portable, high quality setup that allowed me to experience music in many other locations too.

But ah well. I don't quite remember the point of this post now, but maybe someone else has something to add? Maybe you've been able to compose a melody sitting on a train before and it turned out better than what you do in your studio? :blah:

Well, I think it just goes to show that whoever you are, wherever you are, you never hear the same track from the same point of view as the original composer; you can have better acoustics, shittier acoustics, more reverb (larger room), less reverb (more dense room) etc. So at the end of the day, it's always different to a different person.

I am not good in all this HQ productions (not yet!), but I hav the same thing when everything seems perfect. In other locations I remember my music sounded even better then in the studio.
As for composing and not being able to track it down, I had several cases. Some even ended up as a finished track - melodies I remembered. I think composing in your head is far more advanced then in a computer just trying some notes, besides it gives you more actual freedom.

Hehehe, this was my attempt at writing a non-technical post. :P Seems I failed miserably.

Yeah, I think it might have been this:
transparently mastered (i.e. using linear phase technology )

 ;)

As the nightbird mocks and sings,
As I revel
In the comfort darkness brings,
As my angel spreads her wings.

Don't know if this is more like what you meant, but from time to time I listen to whatever song I'm currently working on with headphones on the balcony while having a smoke and watching the stars/clouds/storm/whatever there is. I wouldn't say that the sound is any better there, but it still always helps me hear things that I don't pay any attention to otherwise and can be very inspiring when I run out of ideas.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant. And you're right, it's not so much that it sounds better in a technical sense, but just that you notice things you wouldn't normalise notice sitting behind the PC in your studio. :badass:

Try playing it on a nice car stereo. If the music is done well, driving makes you a 'passive listener', errors or unnatural things in your music will interrupt this.

Atlantis: if you end up haivng to use technical terminology, it does help to define it when you use it for the first time ;)
