Hi folks!

Now, I've got sort of a problem. I once tried to analyze what it does mean to make music. A pretty simple answer could be: It's like you know a language, and you express whatever you want to express in that language. Fine. I could say I know the language of music. I've got the right tools and everything.

But...

What if I've got nothing to say at all? What good is a pencil, a sheet of paper and the knowledge of English language if there's nothing to say at all? What good is a piano, a computer and a good software if there's no source for the music?

I could write down "blah" as good as I could play "C" on the piano. And that's that.

Is there a cure against this syndrome? What could be done against this? Where did Mozart take his notes from? I don't find them in my drawers. :?:

i've experienced this thing some times and it's really hard
the only thing that worked with me in such cases was to leave myself free..i mean live without making music for a while and then there's a time that comes and u do have sth new to say...
Just don't think about it, do other things and it'll pass.

u r gonna miss that after a while (at least that's what happens to me when i feel like my ideas said goodbye :) )

ideas will come again!

I think you're really bored with music...
I mean you must be playing the same things over and over again.
Or you are using the same instruments/methods/software constantly...
Try messing around with some new sounds and programs... That always inspires me...
It's quite foggy... (494 hits)

I think you really hit the spot Sebastian.

Maybe it's that I am bored... And I am playing same things that I like over and over again.

And.... it's hard to switch from MPT to a newer software, although I am playing with Reason from time to time, but never really get to make a song.

Anyway as I said I think that to produce music I need a source. I feel that I am the tool, and that a source produces music through me. Either an emotion, or a girl, or a recent event with great meaning... All the music I have made has had a purpose and an objective, and was inspired by something or someone who is not me.

I've tried to produce ambient sounds, to experiment with that style, and I imagined myself Ambient locations, so far so good, I believe that Desert and Cave have been represented well imo.

As for other songs like FromMorningstarToMidnight, InstantOfLove and FateHurts, they were inspired by emotions.

But what if there's no inspiration source? ......

I run out of ideas when my life gets boring. If nothing happens - what ideas could there be? Mozart was gifted, he had ideas that he collected in his previous lives.
Actually, when ideas run out, I stop writing music. Then something hits me and - there I am, composing again.

I'm going though such a phase as we speak, so I'll tell you what I usually do when I don't seem to have any ideas or inspiration whatsoever.

First thing (that's my rule): In general, the best thing is definately to leave your sheet empty, get up from your chair and do something completely else than writing music for a little while.
My best medicine is to take a walk outside, just wander around while I collect impulses from the environment, strangers I meet, beautiful nature etc. It's a hell of an inspiration-boost i can tell you!

Sometimes I also make sure to bring with me a playlist of mixed genres on my mp3-player, that I listen to on low volume while i walk. Getting inspiration from various genres can create some absolutely brilliant and original ideas

And what if the gap in inspiration exceeds four months now?

Well, only time can decide the next turn in life.

Xtr1m... You are such a martyre, bless ya :)

It happens to us all... worry not, something will inspire you to write in due time..
I went through a gap of not writing ANYTHING for 7 months...
Then all of a sudden, bang! Couldnt stop writing for 4 months solid.. going back into the decline.. it's normal man.

An artiste is a sensitive chappy (or chappess)...

Indulge yourselve in the fantasy that is being a musician, and dwell on it... get depressed by it, get happy by it...

it'll come my good man ;o)

In that case there are two options I can suggest you. First, you don't start on the piano but instead on your sequencer and start with some beats. Just some rhythm which might give ya inspiration for more ;) Second, now that you're exploring Reason this might be a good choice: Start remaking your old songs in a new program  Just pick your favourite melodies and remake them with your current knowledge, make them up-to-date :bravo: I did that and it kept me busy for the entire last year :D Click! :eyes: But seriously, it really helps if there's just something to start with, just a little piano melody or something. At least it's way easier to get started than when you have to start at zero :) Good luck with it!
