Well, since I'm slightly curious and very bored: what's behind your music?

This topic is not about what inspires you to begin with, but about your approach to composing once you've got it.

Some examples:

Do you compose from a purely musical standpoint where the main aim is to make something as musically captivating as possible?

Do you compose with concepts, images, or similiar things in mind, that way applying specific meanings to some or all aspects of the music?

Do you make music by pure intuition?

Do you see music from a more technical point of view, where the main aim is to make something complex and/or original?

Combinations of the above points?

Things I didn't mention?
Ears? (2992 hits)

Eyes? (2838 hits)

wll im totally into techno @ the moment so when i want to create something i want to make it sound simple but complex (think about the bass and the hats conga's in techno)
still a very difficult genre in my opinion but its the genre i love most :lovemusic:
i see it trough a technocal point of view where my intuition leads me :P

It's mostly a combination of these examples, but though the first two are more realistic for me to bring up then the rest :)

I very often compose music when having an image in my mind and therefor tries to "describe" this image with the music I compose. But if you ONLY use the image you want to describe, it'll sound a bit too abstract I guess, therefor composing from a musical standpoint is helpful :D
that was a GREAT reply.. or not

I just depends, sometimes I start a song just fiddling with a VSTi. Sometimes I start with a clear picture of a sound I want to create. Sometimes I start with a melody I've been humming or improvising on the piano... :coffee:

Spontane composing works best for me, no doubt about it. Some of you CTG dwellers might have noticed my posts lately about my composition problems and lack of inspiration - but today the wheels turned! I felt a spontane emotion to create after listening to some Sebastian Spanache and watching an interview with a famous nordic painting artist.

So I guess I create when I feel happy without anything in particular in my mind but to remain in the theme of the song. :)

I think Nifflas would say: "It's just a random blahness". That's what I would say too :) I just play around synths and make a song from that.

Zepsi wrote on 10 Feb. (21:04) :

Sometimes I sit down to compose with such thoughts, but it's never the leading thingy when I actually make a track.

Do you compose with concepts, images, or similiar things in mind, that way applying specific meanings to some or all aspects of the music?

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. Every song is connected with some kind of themes, associations, images. Sometimes every part of the song is connected with something a little different. When there's no meaning, I don't feel like continuing. :) When there is, I feel like continuing and releasing even if the song isn't really smashing.

Do you make music by pure intuition?

I guess that's a bit connected... I mean the themes, musical ideas and intuition work together in a way...

Do you see music from a more technical point of view, where the main aim is to make something complex and/or original?

Like in the first question - it's never crucial, but sometimes I may have an ambition to make something new, different, special, quality.

Things I didn't mention?

Current feelings, the magic of the moment or recent memories. :) They mean a lot and influence what I want to do, although not always so simply and directly. Meaning, when I'm sad, the song doesn't have to have a sad mood.
I would put a tax on all people who post to forums.

I only make music when there's something on my mind that I need to get out.
So music to me is like an output. Chunks of soul unleashed though music.

I have the same thing.. but not always. Sometimes, like today, I have a lot of free time and the urge to create someting. Without emotion just sheer technique and skill :blah: hehe

Also i never manage to create the music I have in my head. Mostly I end up with a completely different tune. Wich is no probl. Cuz I alway suprise myself :)

When I first started tracking / writing music, I really didn't know anything about the rudiments of music theory, so I just did whatever I wanted - resulting in lots of really awful music but a few good tunes here and there.

Then I studied composition for two years and for a while I tried to make all of my songs "numerically" perfect, resulting in many songs that took forever to write but in the end didn't sound special anyway. :P

Then for a while I got sick of trying to make music "the right way" and tried to make tunes the most weird / incorrect way possible, resulting in... well nothing really because I didn't finish very much during this phase. :wall:

Today I try to incorporate what I've learned over the past 10 years without holding myself to any strict standard of what notes are right/wrong, resulting in the tracks you can download on my CTG page. :) :) :)
