When arranging a song you want the final result to sound transparent, that is, every instrument should ideally be heard in the mix. So when it comes down to chords, you have a choice upon how to make them.
Looking at the following example, a C major chord, can be played in a variety of ways:
(C4) C-E-G
(E4) E-G-C
G-C-E.
These three choices will influence how the chord sounds, but also how it blends with the rest of the song.
What is your usual way to this? Say that we have a song in key C major, do you use C-E-G, or perhaps loosing the C altogether 'cause the bass often is in C, so you let go of the C as a way of getting a more transparent sounding song?
By old habit I usually use the C-E-G, but I'm curious to how the optimal way is. Yes, it depends on how the rest of the song is arranged and ...., but still?

Hell, man. Use the inversion you hear when you imagine the progression.

Fukk theory .. god gave you ears and hearing, use those to define your (dis)harmony and go by wotever gets the groove going, doctor

I think theory is there to help, and as long as IT is YOUR servant, not the other way round, it's ok to learn and apply a little. Sometimes theoretical knowledge will just lead you somewhere you would possibly go on your own, but like 50 times longer. I think we're all using theory anyway, we just vary in the degree of theory-usage.
I would put a tax on all people who post to forums.

I agree with Cooth. Dont loose yourself in theorie. Think of it as too easy if you stick with the rules and theory if you compose a track. |

theory sometimes helps, BotB, but u are right. We all have ears. Let's use them

If you learnt more, I doubt it'd harm your skills, Analysis. Unless it'd make you less creative. I believe it wouldn't.
That actually applies to myself as well, as I don't know much of the theory thingy.

Thats one of the great misconceptions in here. Some of you seem to disdain theory as if it's mathematics.
It's a language, chaps. It's there to help you express something, it's not a way of thinking.

True. I agree with what Cooth says, actually.

actually it is mathematics also. I've read some article way back which says the chords progressions which sound good can simply be calculated and that music has a mathematical darkside to it.
