Hi guys.

I have an Athlon XP 2600+ on an ASUS A7V8X-X, and I have this problem.

When Windows is fully loaded, the CPU temperature is around 35-40 °C (normal-low), but it quickly raises (matter of 10 minutes) to 60-70 °C, and keeps itself constant.
Why?
There are no cpu-eating processes running, in fact the worst thing is that when I run, for instance, a 3d game, the temperature goes over 80°C.
The "strangest" thing is that MB temperature stays cool around 30-35, constantly.

CPU cooler is fully functioning, with 2700 average rpm.

Maybe it's the cooler? Could the dissipator be ruined?

NOTE: this happened (and is happening) this winter/spring... my room was always around 18-20 °C...

Could be any number of issues. The CPU fan may be turning at 2700 rpm, but you can never be sure.
More likely is that the contact between the heat sink and the CPU is buggered. Might be worth getting some more thermal paste and sticking a bit more in there just to make sure; clean off any older crap first though.
I run the same CPU and motherboard with a Zalman Flower heat sink (copper). It's a lovely little thing, and I run it 1800 RPM with an average peak of up to 55C.

It could also be that the thermocouple has been knocked, but thats a bit more doubtful. I reckon the interface between the CPU core and the heatsink is at fault, however if you have any spare time it might be worth unplugging all of the HDs and listening to the tone of the fan to see whether the fan might be buggered.
