Hey, just wanted to hear some opinions on why FLAC is good/bad
FLAC is a format, which is lossless, which means you don't lose any audio
when it's compressed, unlike mp3s for instance.
Here's the official link:
http://flac.sourceforge.net/
Now my opinion on the subject, is that this format is useless , since
it would be damned easier to just rip the cd into an iso and go
from there.... right?
Also, does anyone actually release stuff in this format?

Well, I rip the CDs I buy into FLAC because I listen to music through my computer, and it only ends up about 500 MB per CD rather than 700 MB or so. I wouldn't go as far as saying that it's a useless format though, since it outdoes RAR in two ways already (greater compression ratio and being able to stream it). Also I wouldn't be so sure about ripping a CD to ISO since if I'm not mistaken you then can't have tags for the files, not that that's all that important though.
But the main reason I use FLAC is when transfering uncompressed audio when mastering, since the compression ratio is greater than RAR.
I think it's a great format, and if I had my own web space, and I actually released my own music, and I was as good a composer as I am an engineer, sure, I'd probably release in FLAC.

Maximum quality OGG does teh job for me, but if I could actually hear the difference between compressed/uncompressed (Can't due to my current soundcard ) I might go for FLAC...

If you want to transfer undamaged wave source around for mixing, ripping or distribution to someone who will use or work with it, FLAC is the way to go. For everything else you have MP3 and OGG.
Personally, I don't store FLAC around, although for the purposes of archiving it might be quite handy.

I haveb't checked the site, but since I never heard of it and prolly every empty-head which aren't into computers neither, they think it is some kind of virus or something
And I doubt it's as good supported as mp3 and/or OGG. They both do it for me, since I don't hear any difference between .wav and 192kb/s OGG

I compress my mixdown to flac, I also have some music in this format, but I wouldn't share my stuff using it, because in max compression it's still only 50% ratio.
However, for keeping your own stuff it's a good choice, I certainly do not consider it useless.

Hahah, weirdly enough, I've read that argument about "sure, I'd use FLAC, if my system had that kind of audio playback quality!" alot around the net's boards, this would indicate that it's before it's time.... I don't know about you people, but today, I'd rather choose an OGG or MP3 encoded ep release over a FLAC'ed one, but if I had the connection and hardware for it, suddenly it's less attractive to choose MP3 or OGG, since it's lower quality, right?
But, could your average user today spot the differences between a FLAC and a top
encoded OGG or MP3 song? since I know jack about audio compression and how the human ear works, I couldn't really say =(
Also the points made regarding FLAC as a means to transfer uncompromised data really makes sense to me, and the iso not being suitable for tagging is also a good point!

Totally agree. Lossy compressed samples suck ass.
