Mixing engineer not more
This isn't going to be as discouraging as the title probably makes it out to be, but I've decided to once and for all leave part of my career of working as a professional mixing engineer behind. That is, I will discontinue providing mixing, rather focusing solely on continuing to provide exceptional mastering services.

NOOOOOOO!
well, you told me that ages ago. Too bad, mixing engineers are almost as important as mastering engineers. But it's great that you've become such an expert. Good luck!

As far as I understand it, mixing is balancing the volume and applying effects to instruments (separately). Mastering is the afterward processing on the whole final song.

yes mixing is what yo do yourself as an artist, effects, channel volumes etc etc.
mastering is the final part where slight inbalances will be corrected. And the track will be processed so it meets the industry's standards. For example: vinyl tracks need to be mastered differently than an average album track. And special radio mixes of songs are oftenly also mastered differently as far as I know. Every medium has different properties, the mastering engineer makes sure your track will be within the limits of a certain medium while keeping the quality of the track as good as possible

I'm such a hard case. Actually, I've wanted to drop mixing for ages (as I told you at the time), but somehow I keep persisting. Recently, however, I've learned how I just can't do it for a living, also because of what MatthijsB said. Mixing used to be done by a dedicated engineer, but times have changed, and with effects so integrated into the production process now, every artists is doing their own mixing. No one wants to hire a mixing engineer anymore. Mixing is as much a part of the artistic process as composition is, so it's only logical the artist does it him/herself.
Your project was actually more a case of tracking (including sound design even), and I don't do that, let alone mixing. Anyway, I'm happy to discuss it further in person, and maybe we can still sort something out, but I really just want to focus on mastering only, which is what I do best anyway.

Exactly - and the all-important one of mixing your instruments together. You have to carefully craft the sounds together so that they all work together in one happy mix, but also ensure the overall sound is as balanced as possible, not only in terms of the instruments' levels, but that all-important tonal balance I won't stop complaining about as well.
Mastering is then there to fix the final imbalances you may have missed, and prepare the track for duplication, all while treating the sound in a unique way that you can't while treating the individual mix elements.
