I just think the whole idea is a bit scrambled now. Probably best to just leave it and let you all get back to producing creative music? Then I'll get on to writing my advanced mixing tutorial at some stage, and those interested can refer to that to better their mixing skills.
Mastering is really more about creating a consistent sound anyway, which really isn't all that important when downloading individual tracks from different artists. It's just that the whole too much limiting thing was kind of bothering me, but oh well.

I like this very much Seems like a good idea to me, although I find it hard to make songs in one month. I mean, my average is a month, but I hate deadlines. Why not make it 2 months, so that everyone can complete its song?
It took a while, but : It's a new release! (3501 hits) |

Well, the idea was for it to be running every month, so technically there isn't a deadline because you don't have to compete every single month. Just when you happened to have a track ready that you thought was technically produced really well, you might decide to submit it.

i think better idea for a mastering compo would be..
1. pick an unmastered song, with kinda bad mixdown
2. master that track
3. the one who makes it sound the best wins
|
It would get boring, with Atlantis getting first prize every month.

You can't make something horrible sound great. It's the same with EQ'ing frequencies that aren't there...

Yep, and infact, that's not the real purpose of mastering after all.

I think its a great idea, and an original one. Would bring up a healthy point in music production and also provide some usefull advice.
Would be a shame not to run it.

I see it this way:
1) If the compo is run, and the best sounding track wins a free mastering, then what happened to "me", with a shitty sounding track, "me" who wanted to learn something new, and improve my mixing skills? ...
2) If the compo is run, and the worst sounding track would win, then we'd all make shitty sounding tracks
I don't think there's a middle way..

It would be just as good and useful for me to lose a mastering compo as it would be for artists to receive a fairly low rating with a long and detailed review to go with it. It'd help me to see where I've gone wrong, and give me a new perspective on the track.
But, CTG isn't really a community for engineers and I really don't see much point in taking it that far just for me.
Just about that EQing frequencies that aren't there issue though: Personnally I never really liked that expression since it isn't even really true. Most sounds still contain all frequencies, but often at a very low level. You can still boost these, though you can't expect to get the same result as if you recorded or made the sound again to contain more of those frequencies to start with.
I just think that if there wasn't too much pressure put onto the compo (heck, it wouldn't even bother me if one month there were no entries put forward at all), then people would just continue to produce tracks as they do, and perhaps one day they might realise that their track actually sounds quite good. They could then decide to put it forward for free mastering.
About your point though, Cdnalsi, I agree. But you with the shitty sounding track could still learn something from the good sounding track, and how mastering might transform it even better.
